About Companions

My level 19 char has 3 companion slots, 1 taken by the free companion from the quest. If I can afford another companion, can I than put it in a free slot and summon both? The question seems probably silly but I can't remember seeing someone around my level running around with more than 1 companion...so is there a catch?
In case you find my grammar or spelling weird ---> native german speaker ;)

    You can only have one companion out at the same time. The reason for the active companion slots is so you can send some out to train while using another without having to equip their gear. Once you make a companion idle, it's gear gets transferred to your inventory.
