Companion Transfer Question

Hello
I have a level 7 alt Great Weapon Fighter that I have no interest in levelling anymore after seeing their poor performance at level 60. I also have an epic companion on this character that I obviously don't want to lose. I would like to transfer this companion to my main char and delete the GWF but I can't since the transfers are not possible yet.
I would eventually buy another character slot just to be able to create a third character but it feels wrong that I should spend even more money than I already have to work around something the game supposedly offers already.
Can any admin respond with an estimated date of when this will be fixed?
