I believe they were paid, so that would technically make them professionals. I'm sure some of them had degrees as well. Casting insults at people is always a good way to get things accomplished.

What does cheat engine have to do with anything? they just...well I cant say what the exploiters did but it was all in game.
The AH exploit wasn't accomplished because of a cheat program. it was all done because negative values could be entered into the bid field. but it's being fixed!!!
Open the Launcher. Click Options near the top. Check Disable on-demand patching. This will download another couple of gigs.

Having a glaring vulnerability in an MMO that has such an effective cash shop and allows the exchange of 'purchased' currency, as well as activating said purchases during the existence of this vulnerability and taking money from customers during a period pre - official release is a good way to wreck years and years of hard work and dedication to a project.
It's problem enough that such an asinine thing happened, but a lot of this animosity is due to the fact.. that this studio, and its team, are NOT amateurs- they didn't get to hide behind that. They have many years, in some cases decades as well as a healthy handful of fully released titles-worth of experience that should have all but been a fail-safe against such an event that would potentially render their audience's hard-earned cash very, if not completely ineffectual.

That's why any halfway decent programmer always validates input fields, such as the bid field.
