Time for some education...

Ok I thought I might spend some time educating a few of you on understanding the "Need" and "Greed" rule when rolling on loot. I reckon atleast 90% of Neverwinter players are quite frankly HAMSTER when it comes to this system and it will keep going on until people educate!

When loot drops in a group you have three options Need, Greed, Pass

Need - This is when you roll on an item that you character needs. By need this means that the item dropped is better then what you currently have equipped and NOTHING more.

Greed - This is when an item drops and you sole purpose is to sell on the AH or vendor trash it (or maybe even simply discard it). You have no requirement for this item other then to hopefully make some AD/Gold etc from said item.

Pass - You simply don't want the item at all, you can't equip it, or you have no room in your inventory or you simply don't want it.

It is that simply. In reality though and for some reason it seems to only happen in this game is that people will roll need on the item just because their character can equip it and nothing more. Like for example we have just done an epic dungeon, during that run 3 blue daggers dropped. Now being an epic we knew he can't possibly have needed any of them and sure enough inspecting him he was equipped with two epic daggers hence he "ninjad" the items for pure personal gain. When quizzed why he rolled them his reply was "I am a rogue and they are rogue items and I am going to sell them on the AH"

^^

btw to "ninja" and item is someone who purely rolls need on a item for personal gain such as selling in the AH.

So to recap below are reasons you SHOULDN'T roll need and should ALWAYS roll greed

1. You plan is to sell the item on the AH/Another character or to a vendor
2. For a friend/family memory not currently in the raid/party
3. For one of you alts (an alt is an additional character not normally classed as your main)

Finally in addition to this regents are another item that shouldn't really be rolled need unless at the beginning of a party it is agreed that ALL regents are either rolled as Need or Greed by all party members (unless of cause they choose to pass).

Finally part 2 ... I understand that in some cases loot drops that needs to be identified to know if its better that what you have equipped. In theory this gear should also be rolled greed but to be honest the DEVS need to change this so all dungeon loot doesn't need to be identified to facilitate a need/greed rolling system.

The only items that show on need/greed/pass are unknown items that I have seen so far. If it is a known item and you killed the critter it came from it is yours. My wife and I have been running the quests together and this is what I have noticed. So if the item is unknown, then you would not be able to tell what it's properties are. This is, of course, on quest up to around level 25. I can't say if the higher level items show the names or not. With that being said the need or greed system should be removed and the system of keepwhat you kill should be used. That would ease the op's apparent urges to flame others and use the word HAMSTER out of it's true context.

I'm not talking about partying with your mate and a quabble over pants loots, I'm talking about 5 man party doing dungeons etc. And no it isn't using HAMSTER out of context

    HAMSTER: "
A person born with a mental condition and therefore has to work a million times harder to be able to do simple things (such as learn and communicate) that we take for granted. "

Though to be honest some people grow to be HAMSTER as they get older are aren't necessarily born that way!

If you are doing pub dungeon..then everyone are free to choose whichever choice they want (I dont do it, but Ive seen many people NEED on blue/purple item they cant equip) which I'm absolutely fine with it (Yes there are times I got ninja'd of my item but I dont complaint coz I know it's pub).

I only need on items that says it can be used by my character. Pass on reds cause they just take up space. If it says I can use it, I'm needing it. That's what you need for...You don't need on an item "hoping" it's better than what you have. You need on it, and if it's better, yay! If not, Then okay, Keep playing. By the way, Like cr said, if you're running with a pub, it's a free-for-all. People gonna need on what they want to, and that's just the way it is. Even if you agree upon rules before that, that doesn't mean they won't break them. So expect to be "ninja'd" lol.

I think the context he was going for is if all the items are unidentified then the instance of selecting need will never come up.

For arguments sake HAMSTER in its true context:
to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede.

Urban dictionary gives definitions on how words are commonly used, not what they truely mean.

I select need on anything I can equip that is at an equal rarity or higher then what I have at the time. If I am on a low character I will roll need on anything I can equip if the level requirment on my current item of that type is 4 lower then my current level.
