I need to tell the player that he wants to investigate a wall. I cannot use an NPC to guide on this. Are there other ways of giving messages to the players?

Tilt has a great post explaining how to do this by making an interaction that requires an item you never give the player and basically using the failure message to display a little "DM voice" thing.

(I'm too lazy to do a search for it at the moment, though!)

In this old school-style adventure, the hero(es) explore an old ruined castle while searching for a fabled magic item at the behest of a wizard.

Right, so if you interact with a object, and you don't have its Required Item, then the failure message will display in red text on the screen. That works pretty well. You do need to create the item, just don't give it to the player.

Or you could always put an interactible object in front of the wall. There are some non-obtrusive ones like a banner or shield, or perhaps even a crack decal.
