I saw the posts where the launcher was having problems and is supposedly fixed; where server status shows red but is actually up. This is different.
Post-patch when I try to launch the game loads about 40% of the way through the "CRYPTIC" splash screen (it only has the name CRYPTIC in white on a black field) before it freezes then ultimately crashes out.
I tried doing a forced file check, nothing wrong was corrected. It still does this.
I tried doing another forced file check and loading in safe mode. It still does this.
Game won't load now.
Made multiple attempts to be sure, does it exactly the same every time.

Resolved the problem. It took a complete uninstall (followed by a system reboot for good measure), re-download the game, re-install and let it patch before I could get back in.
Not sure what happened but something corrupted in the patching process before and file check couldn't tell.
If anyone else is experiencing problems similar to what I experienced perhaps this will work for you as well.
