I've been thinking about the companions for a while now. I do like how they can 'evolve' and gain new skins as they gain levels but what I'd really like to see is the ability to totally customize the companions. I mean everything from race, to gender, to looks. For any who have played Star Trek Online, something similar to customizing bridge officers. I feel it would just look better than everyone running around with clones of the same few companions. To take it a step further, it'd also be nice if companions had full equipment slots and their appearance would correspond with them just like a player character. It would really help to make them feel like there is some depth to them in my opinion.
I don't think that companions need to be made into full characters in terms of gear and what not. This would only encourage antisocial looting behaviors.
And hopefully they will make more and more companions available, and this will help with variety by itself.
But still, if I am going to be running around with a wayward wizard, it would be nice if I could do more than just eventually change their clothing.
Maybe just open up a number of preset faces? Like they have when you are making your characters. Just a number of faces with whatever hair and head type and color choices that they have.
Seems like an easy way to get more variety without really overthinking it.
Wayward wizard might always be a Drow male, but it won't always have to look like like every other wayward wizard out there. With 4(?) options for wardrobe combined with another 12 different head and body options, that would lead to a decent variety.
Couple that with maybe another wizard or three companion options (Human, Elf, and Tiefling, maybe) with one more male and a couple of females (so two of each gender), and you would have a great many options.
I don't think that making more basic companions is a high priority, and I understand the desire at this time to incentivize certain behaviors amongst the player base (spending money, or at least AD), but I would at least like to see every basic companion have at least one 'mirror' of the opposite gender and a different race.
A female Tiefling wizard, a male Dwarven cleric, a female Half-Orc guardian fighter, etc. The dog is probably okay just as a dog, though. They can keep the more exotic animals in the AD and Zen markets.
Hope I didn't ramble too much.

You made a good point with the gear and how it could likely negatively affect looting behaviors. I hadn't really thought about that part of it.
I'm sure there will eventually be more companions, we've already seen them introduce new ones a couple different times now, and I agree that they would likely rather do that and have people buy them than to have everyone just stick with basic ones. While I would prefer their looks to be fully customizable, just giving them a small selection of presets would be better than nothing. It might even make people want to pay for the companion upgrade tokens when they become available if the players get attached to a companion they have made their own rather than just another cookie cutter model. I don't know.
Either way, it was just something that I thought would add a little more depth to companions as a whole. I'm sure as time goes on we will see changes in things just as a part of any game's general evolution.
