Yeah, I gotta admit I warned a new recruit guildie about this the other day. Already had the dog, someone said try the healer... Hey healer that would be cool. Got my cleric, pop it open, name? Marcus... good strong cleric name. Open, companion screen, HOLY HAMSTER IT'S A GIRL! So, yeah, 6500 AD or whatever it is I now have Melinda the cleric and a cautionary tale to tell to newbies...
6K AD is "massive"? Seriously? Eh, it could be cheaper, but that wasn't even one daily during the double weekend. You could make that selling random items on the AH even.

It would be nice if there were a grace period within which a player can rename their companion, or even trade it in for a different variety. Let's say, 24 hours and after that you're locked in to paying for any changes henceforth. To me, this seems far more fair and favorable.

I also agree on the appearance issues. I don't have a racial preference, but in town sometimes it looks like there's a clone army when I spy a dozen shabby cleric companions at the altar. I'd really like to see some variation.
So I just read the Companion guide and they dont even mention all the different companions like they do for the mounts. I guess I'll get around to this. Oh, seems you have to click on the Role first to get a list of the companions.
Well nevermind on the wiki being of any help with gender/race.
Open the Launcher. Click Options near the top. Check Disable on-demand patching. This will download another couple of gigs.
Yeah. Show me where that is again? You know.. the part where it says MALE or Female, or What race, or anything at all? This is right clicked. Just like you said. Try again.
the part that says 'right click once it is in your bag, before you double click to bind it and name it" That part.
The gender and race is always the same and should not matter to you until you come to name it, so it is simple to check before you bind it.

Maybe they could re-work that mission so that rather than talking to a salesman you instead talk to each companion and figure out which one that you want to hire.
That would give everyone a clear look at exactly what the basic companion appearance was. It also seems like more work than it is worth.
A preview window, maybe? If they add more basic companions in time, putting more and more inside that building may not be a viable solution, but if they had a preview window that you could check out it would serve the same purpose.
I think this is a brilliant idea and is in keeping with the spirit of DnD. I don't know if the devs would be interested though. Say when you get your companion, you talk to the NPCs of the class types offered and pay them a 'fee' if you want an additional one, besides the one you're initially given. That could even be obtained by presenting your first companion with a token from the quest giver to collect on a favor owed.
This is also coming from someone who has only played the game through quests, not the extras like foundry or daily's etc.. None of my characters have gotten more than 1 gold piece (except my 30), and have less than 1k AD in their pockets. I know I am needing to do the extra stuff, but as a new person just trying to go through the quests themselves, this is where I would be shocked at the expenses many people seem to scoff at. Also, committing to purchasing the companion and only after that being able to see the extra information is dodgy to me. I'm already broke and skittish about losing the money, buying the companion and THEN finding out it's not what I want is scary business.

The Way of the Samurai is found in death. When it comes to either/or, there is only the quick choice of death. It is not particularly difficult. Be determined and advance.
That is kind of my point though..if it isn't in my inventory, can i still preview wizard? I did not see a preview selection in the options when I right clicked. It only gave descriptions and stats but no visual or mention of gender.
But the guy that you talk to on the companion mission, where you get the one for free, he tells you in his description of each companion what gender they are.
I said that earlier.
You talk to the guy, you click on the different companions to get more info, and he says that "he" or "she" can be trained up to improve their abilities.
Not the vendor, but the NPC that actually gives you the free companion.
But the preview window should be available at the vendor, not just once you purchase the item.
Beyond that, maybe when you talk to the vendor just have one of those little pop-up windows appear mentioning that you can right click to preview a companion before you buy it.
Because re-writing the mission is not only extra time and effort, but it has little payoff. They can not include every companion that the game will ever have inside that building. It just isn't feasible.
At least not if the game sticks around for any amount of time.

Except I don't think he tells you anything about the great weapon fighter companion.

I wouldn't mind it if they made the first rename free.
