Moving to another Server

Is there a way to move character's to another Server?
I wanted to mail an item from one character to another and 20 levels after the fact I learn they need to be on the same server.
I cannot even invite or be invited to a guild when I am on another server.
I wish there was a warning on the character creation page listing restrictions when creating characters on other servers.
Can I please get a list of restrictions and possible work arrounds for having characters on other servers
(Mailing items to alternate characters, Inviting alternate toons to my guild?)
I remeber hearing something about the servers merging eventually is this true?
Is there a method of moving characters from one server to another? (SPent alot of AD and ZEN on some charater make rerolling them out of the question.
