Just got out of a domination game with my cleric where I was totally dominating the other team. Only died twice the entire game with 18 assists and the point I was defending in the middle was never lost the entire game despite constant attacks. I was likely the most important person on the winning team. I'm the lowest score in the entire game. This doesn't quite add up.
There really needs to be personal points earned for defense, this is just silly. As it is now with a cleric, if you're choosing to play defensively you're choosing to throw away your reward at the end. Only getting points for capping just encourages me to ignore my team, run off and try to ninja points from the other team even if they're going to be retaken 30 seconds later.

People can complete dailies without scoring any points whatsoever, and no points are awarded for successfully defending an enemy attack on one of your points. If you want the highest points in the match (and therefore the shiny blue item as a reward) it's better to roam around taking points repeatedly than actually sticking around to defend against the other team.
It's just a really stupid system overall, and one which shows a lack of understanding on the part of the devs as to how to design a proper system that rewards team players.
