I'm sure there are some posts about this buried in other threads but I just wanted to point out how important this is to some.
First off I want to say that cryptic really outdid themselves. I mean really. I wasn't expecting much but WOW. I have been an avid MMO player since the dawn of MMOs I am a complete and total nerd when it comes to them. I am also a DnD fanboy who was extremely disappointed with the original DnD mmo, and this had been nothing short of amazing and is by far my favorite mmo to date. I haven't been this sucked into an MMO in many years (were talking Everquest here). That said I would like to discuss some of my issues with the game and some things that I think would not only make more money for further development but would be good for the community as a whole.
When I heard about this game coming out I was like a little school girl. I literally almost squealed at the thought of a neverwinter mmo. Then I noticed it would be hosted by perfect world and my excitement quickly turned to a frown, I have only played one other PWE title and that was forsaken world and I liked it a lot, I even spent quite a bit of money on it but its biggest issue was the soul gold (astral diamonds) and the fact that very important things (respeccing) were over priced. At first in the game it wasn't such a big deal but as you REALLY got into the game respeccing (like most mmos) became something that was needed quite often. You can charge whatever the hell you want for bags, mounts, character renames, and other vanity items but such core game mechanics should have another outlet. I can forsee eventually having to quit this game because I will be spending more than I would for a pay to play game (I have already dumped 80$ into this game for mounts etc which is reasonable I would have easily spent that much to buy the game.)
I propose that you keep the respecing price the way it is and make another model for 15$ a month (or even 20$ a month) for infinite respecs or for the price of gold. Maybe other things but if this was the ONLY thing that you did I would still do it. Maybe a bag that can only be accessed while you are VIP or more bank space while you are VIP. Zen store discounts and the all that other jazz.
As far as other things you can charge whatever the hell you want for it but there is something PWE needs to learn that other free to play companies already have- If you have a bushel of apples and you try to sell them for 50$ each you might sell two or three to some people who have more money than sense but if you price them fairly you will sell all of them and make a LOT more money. I spent 200$ last month on Tera: Rising because there free to play model is amazingly fair - say what you want about the game they know how to get your money through promotions and limited offers instead of pigeon holding you into spending money on core mechanics.
Even if you have disposable income (which I do I am an old nerd with no kids and a decent job) It seems insulting to charge for certain things without another venue for avid players and while I could pay for those things without a second glance pushing the zen market on almost every window makes the game feel cheap and unappealing maybe make VIP hide all those zen market reminders too. Its like having pop up adds in the game. We get it, there's a zen market.
This game is by far one of the best I have ever played we are talking AAA premium stuff here and it should be treated as such this isn't some silly korean grinder you have here. This is a potential contender for mmo of the year. I understand this is still open beta and everything is still subject to change and that is why I am posting here. Please think of the future of this game and do not drive some of your less fortunate players away with such business practices. It should speak volumes that when I talk to my friends in mumble from other games I play to try this game they are reluctant to because of past experiences with PWE.
I totally understand that the idea is to make money but please don't ruin Neverwinter out of sheer greed, you truly have a beautiful diamond here. The series and name alone deserve more than that and even if you ignored the fact that its Neverwinter the game is simply -outstanding-
