...you dont know what gender it is. So now i got my first companion - a cleric, and game asks me for the name, and i dont want to call male cleric for example: "Margaret" or female cleric "John"...
Well if i believe correctly the item is kind of a letter and it says "cleric". And as soon as I wanted to use it, it asked for the name, not mentioning what gender the companion is and that you can actually rename him/her later.
I didn't think it told you, I had to pay AD to rename my gwf companion because I had assumed she was a he

I think you can inspect the letter and it will tell you, (might be wrong). But, if it is the cleric from the companion quest, it will always be a woman. Not sure about the cleric of Kelemvor.

This. Just right-click and inspect before binding the companion to see whether it's a male or female.
Lol, I did that last night. I have a sexy Healer following me around named Herbert
Haha Yeah thats why i made a thread and then googled it till i found out if its he or she. Of course you can google everything, but whats the point of description in the tooltip if it doesnt states the most important thing when it comes to a name picking.
p.s.
not everyone know you can inspect such items.
Is that intentional trap set for players to try and pull more money out of their pockets by luring them into such traps? Come on... Even tho i have already read on forums that i can inspect those items, i didnt even thought that sellsword can be anything but male... so i called (what turns out to be) her "Bruss". -.-'
I don't think it was an intentional trap. If I recall correctly, I did not have that issue on the closed beta. I have not yet got to that point this time around.
