Any tips for being a good healer?

So I've come from many other tab-targeting type games and played healers in all of them. I'm now playing a Cleric and only up to level 9 so far but it's definitely been a challenge with this game... although I've enjoyed it.
I'm used to having the option to quickly click on a player in a group and throw out a heal but obviously that's not so easily done here. I don't see a way to click on the portraits on the left and maybe I'm not supposed to be able to. With that said, how am I supposed to heal in a group of 5 when it appears I have to aim at people and it can be very clustered at time? It can get frustrating especially when someone is in dire need of help. Up til now, I've just been getting close and doing my aoe attacks which gives off a group heal. I'd like to do more direct healing.
Just looking for some tips as I'd like to take on this challenging role... if I can see the benefit to do so.
