Random question... has anyone else noticed that Iron Guard isn't applied when you hit enemies with aggravating strike and shield slam. I just happened to notice it earlier today when playing around, my powers and cleave were applying the debuff properly but whenever I switched to aggravating or shield slam it did diddly.

Yet another broken feat to add to the list or mayhaps intended? Would seem really stupid if it was intended...

I, too, would like to see this discussion reopened. I've been level 60 tanking using Rokuthy's build as a guide, after using this guide while leveling up. Post-update, I find I'm taking more damage than I can handle, mostly because my shield is useless and breaks almost instantly when trying to tank a boss. And the class just moves too slowly to avoid every big boss attack. Or maybe it's just me -- I'm more than willing to admit I'm not a fantastic player from a fast reaction standpoint...

So I am considering respeccing back to this turtle build, with a focus on maximizing shield skills and overall survivability. Are any Guardians still monitoring this thread and, if so, has anyone seriously revisited this approach to the class?

I have a 60 Tank, full tank build (at least I think it is). Basically, I'm still using full PVP gear, with Founder Weapon and Grand Regent Shield. All utility slots are rank 5 movement, defense slots are slotted with rank 5 deflection. My feats are the same as the ones in this guide, except instead of slotting for 5/5 Fight On, I went 5/5 Armor of Bahamut and 5/5 Shield Defense, and 5/5 Balanced Shield Fighter into 5/5 Brawling Warrior. I use Iron warrior, Enforced Threat, and Knight's Valor as encounter powers, and Threatening rush for At-will. The daily I use the most is supremacy of steel, fighter's recovery is kinda useless as my damage is HAMSTER. You'll notice your AP gain is insane when you're blocking, so keep spamming that daily. You'll be able to stay alive without any problems if you have a decent cleric in the group. Aggro holding is no issue at all. I use Enforced Threat and Iron Warrior to regain shield meter, Iron Warrior is also good for those "Oh ****" moments, as u gain temp HP according to how much HP you have left. When my shield breaks, I just run around for like 3-4 secs until my shield meter regens, then I start shielding again.

Update: I got the full Grand Regent set, it is AMAZING for tanking. I slotted every offense and defense slot with Silvery enchantments for recovery and deflection, the weapon enchant slot with lifedrinker, which I'm loving at the moment, as it generates threat AND heals you. I've slotted a negation enchantment into my armor enchantment slot, as people say its better than soulforged, and I must say its true, my HP seldom goes below 25%, even if it does there's pots and Iron Warrior. I have also respecced my feats, I took out Powerful attack (not planning on doing damage), and put them into 3/3 Potent Challenge, 3/3 Toughness and 1/5 Ubiquitous Shield (Nowhere else to put that last point). I also changed 5/5 Overwhelming Impact to 5/5 Fight On from the tactition tree for faster cooldowns on my Enforced Threat and Knight's Valor, for better threat holding.

I'd like to bump this, I was wondering if you made any updates to your build with the changes of GF.

Also, shouldn't this be in Barracks?

Having run the conquerer spec for quite some time, I was finding I was a bit squishier in the latter T2's and CN. This past weekend I went over to the preview shard and ran a group of us through CN up to the 1st boss. Running a similar set up, with probably the only major difference was 5/5 in ubiquitous Shield, my clerics first response was "wow" what a major difference. I was using the Grand Regent set, along with the ancient weapon/shield set so I was sitting at 51% damage mitigation and 22% defelection, which was up from 40 and 13 using timeless and conquerer. I could probably put different enchants in stuff to tweak it a bit more, but I ran out of time. I do have to say I really liked the knights valor with supremacy of steel. I watched aggro peel off of team members without me even actively taunting them.

I have also been playing around with different weapon enchantments on test, and tbh, I wasnt that impressed with the returns from lifedrinker. With a noramal quality I was getting only 40 HP returned per hit. It seemed to only proc off of cleave and not threatening rush, but I may have been mistaken.I wasnt using supremace of steel, or KV when I was testing it, so not sure if it procs from that as well. I have a greater I can try as well there, so maybe tonight Ill give it a go. Overall I still liked the GPF because with Supremacy of steel and KV active it appread to proc the GPF hitting them with the debuff and the DOT .

Overall though it made for alot easier run, and even with the lower DPS on my part, it did not seem to take any longer. If anything it was easier with myslelf able to hold the adds and everyone else focusing on them, instead of chasing individual adds all over. Also I really like the 25% damage reduction from the combat effects from ubiquitous shield. It seems that when you are swarmed with adds, it is easy for them to get combat advantage, even with moving all the time.

Since the fix on the preview shard leashing the bosses to thier area, groups are going to have tank the adds, or handle them in some fashion. Personally I think this will be the way to go forward.

I've tried threatening rush with lifedrinker on dummies, and it seemed to proc as I saw the animation for it. Have not tested with supremacy of steel yet either. Which feat did u sacrifice for 5/5 in Ubiquitous shield?

I was thinking of taking out some defense runes and replacing them with Max HP, as it doesn't affect much after you have 50% damage reduction.

Since I didnt copy this Protector setup indentically, but went a different route with a goal of tanking by intercepting damage for the party, im not sure what i would have replaced on it. However you can look at my power/feat setup in my build thread here:

Almost identical feats, but instead of Action Surge, you placed the points in Ubiquitous Shield, and I didn't have any points in Powerful Attack as I went for Distracting Shield. I placed 5 points from Overwhelming Impact into Fight On, so that my cooldowns for grabbing and holding aggro were faster, and also the points from Balanced Shield Fighter into Armor of Bahamut. Not sure why but my shield tends to break quite often when when I'm using Shield Smash.

The reason I passed on action Surge was that with my rotation, my dailies are up everytime i need them. Supremacy of steel I pop at the same time as Knights Valor, so my AP is full by then. I tried Fight on on the preview shard, and I was not to impressed with the amount of time it shaved off.

Take a look at how high your mitigation is. From what I could tell, damage gets reduced by mitigation and then the leftover goes to the shield for blocking. That is why my skills work to increase my mitigation, or decrease the damage done by mobs.

I hate 52% damage reduction and 30% to deflect.

Bumping, because it's already on page 6. Good argument for having class specific sub forums. Would like Guardian Fighters to be able to see this and review it.

I hope this help to bump that guide, and i also put a post in the guides master post because GF didn't have guides there. GF separated forum? I hope that can be possible xD

Edit: I do that for see better what are u talking about the feats. ¿How you see that people?

    Hello,

I am new to the tanking. I followed this guide here and so far it works fine, thanks a lot for that.
I would like to learn how to kite, how does it work?
How do I survive surrounded by mobs? I mean my blocking shield only works in front of me right?
Would be nice if someone could tell me which powers and tactics you use. You can also mail me.
Thanks a lot for help in advance.

The big thing about kiting is don't stop. Depending on the mobs, you can even turn around and run back through them without being at serious risk, but you can't stop or slow down. Forget your shield. The only attacks you need to worry about come from ranged mobs. Anything else you might need to worry about is generally so slow that it won't hit you as long as you keep moving. Frozen Heart being the biggest place to kite. The golems have only slow attacks that can't hit a target that isn't moving towards them. Their AOEs won't start unless you're in range and as long as you don't stop you can run out of it. Blocking anything just slows you down. The trolls aren't much different. They have a heavy hitting attack but it's slow. Everything else they do you can shrug off. Your group needs to kill the archers though, at least those that spawn around the boss. I like to slot Into the Fray (make sure you've got a little distance before you activate it) to move faster, Lunging Strike (to move even faster and also to get aggro on mobs/kill archers) and Frontlne Surge to get aggro/kill archers. Use your Tab mark to pick up aggro on freshly spawned mobs. It's vital that your party understands not to attack them or use AOE powers as mark alone won't pull them to you if they get attacked. Otherwise, just pay attention. Don't keep rotating the camera and find out you're running into a wall. Don't pull the mobs too close to the boss and foul up the rest of the party. Unless you have the Eye artifact, don't try to revive someone.
