I believe you. I just never had the problems in the games I played EQ, EQ2, LOTRO & DDO before f2p, etc. so I assumed it was a f2p thing..
The single biggest idiot I've ever run across in a MMO was back when EQ2 was still a paid subscription game, & WoW is absolutely crawling with Butt Fedoras. Conversely, the community in LOTRO & DDO has always been excellent, & EQ2 is for the most part still a more mature game than many I've played. The notion that free-to-play inherently has bad communities & pay-to-play better ones is simply not true.
FWIW, I support "class loot," but until it comes, I'm NOT going to be the Butt Fedora I dislike: I flatly refuse to roll Need on everything that drops. If this means I don't get loots ... then I don't get loots. I'd rather go without, then be part of the problem.
Fare you well

I agree about leading by example.
Roll need on what you need only even if others profit by rolling on everything.

The DDO and LoTR community is excellent with this stuff.
But that wasn't always the case.
DDO started with a system whereby party leader had a say in who gets what.
It was a disaster and was changed to the current system that LoTR followed.
Now in DDO everyone gets drops in their name. Your loot is your loot is the rule.
If you don't want something THEN you put it up for a roll or trade it in chest to someone else for what you want.
Everyone gets something.
Something like that would work great in NWO
Make the mobs squirt things like enhancements and coin and common gear that whoever grabs gets and make named gear drop in chests, only randomly assigned to an individual.
Less drama, less reason to boot someone (they may pull an item you want).
Yes, this issue really needs fixing one way or another and I'm unsure why we've never heard any sort of official reply on this.
A dev recently said that "class loot" is something they're looking into. What that actually means, & when a solution may be implemented, was left unsaid.

My 2cp
I'd have no objections to that system, as you say it worked fine in DDO.
