Why have Inspect Mode?

It is incredibly frustrating to not be able to zoom the camera view at all in normal play mode. Inspect mode should just be standard, not a separate mode. Why separate the two and prevent being able to zoom the view with the mouse wheel? The game is zoomed too far out at high resolutions for my tastes.
