Control Wizard as Striker viable?

So... Is it viable to play CW as a primary striker in end game Epic Dungeons? I'm only level 40, and everything has been a cake walk so far. I'm always getting the most damage in dungeons and skirmishes, most of the time by fairly substantial amounts. I've decided to focus on solely AoE skills and it's working out pretty well for me, even with the Elites mobs after the trash has been cleared out.

The only problem I can foresee with playing CW in this way, is that may offer slightly less group synergy than alternative builds.. I'm leaning towards Thaumaturge vs Renegade because I rarely have to stop between Encounters to cast Magic Missle, and Thaumaturge seems to offer some good damage enhancements and debuffs to my primary encounters.

By focusing on max damage through feated AoE spells the CW, my goal is to play the Striker role through clearing up all the trash mobs quickly and effectively so that we can focus down the Elite monsters with fewer distractions. It also makes for extremely easy solo play, as my Spell Mastery Chill Strike seems to 1 shot most trash packs of mobs.

Thus far, for encounters I've decided on Spell Mastery Chill Strike, Conduit of Ice, Sudden Storm, and Shield. Shield seems to do an impressive amount of damage when I trigger it and offers the utility of an AoE knockback, but I think I'm likely going to swap it for Steal Time if it proves to be as awesome as everyone as says.

So yea, I know we're not all level 60 yet, but how do you guys think this will all play out? Would you mind being group with a CW that could consistently top the damage leader boards, even if it came from mostly AoE damage?

I definitely made 2 wizards, one for Thaumaturge and one for Renegade. My main is a cleric, I'm all for wizards that AOE the ads, that's what I do.

However, avoid knockback abilities unless you are the only one dealing with ads (which you never should be, same for cleric). The cleric may put down a flaming strike or daunting light or the rogue would be trying to gib that elite and you just sent it flying to gawd knows where. Not cool.
    Steal Time is awesome.

I'd welcome you! Just please don't die twice in a row to red circles, pretty please? :P

Just so you know, in D&D Aoe Damager = Controller. The Control part doesn't just mean cc. Striker is high single target dps and that doesn't look like what you are trying to do.

I wouldn't exactly call you a striker as I believe a TR will still outdamage you on bosses (which is what a striker is really for) but that doesn't mean you're useless as damage. I'm routinely topping the damage in dungeons as well on my CW and I'm built more balanced for damage and control. Most of the damage we do is area effect so that makes sense we'd be high on charts for total damage done.

I wonder though if the control you're giving up really gives you that much more hitting power. For example chill strike slotted in tab will kill weak packs for me too, and I'm a 49 renegade.

I've found it to be the same. Tiefling min maxing Int / Cha. Full damage talents / feats etc. Chill Strike bound to tab. Go down the middle paragon tree and buff your damage - the 20% to frost damage to those NOT affected by chill stacks is amazing.

In dungeons I roll chill strike / alter time / sudden storm / conduit of ice. I use the 15% aoe passive, have 4-6% aoe damage + from heroic feats, and then the 20% frost buff to those not affected by chill. Haven't lost the damage meter race yet. There are solo times where more control helps so switching things around is a good idea.

Current lvl is 46 so this isn't an endgame discussion.
Gave in to that momentary sadistic twitch...

Snap Freeze is the Paragon Feat that gives you up to 20% damage on your Cold Powers on targets that aren't affected by Chill, which would seem to work awesome with Chill Strike and even Conduit of Ice, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working as intended. I've sent out a bug report and posted on the Bugs discussion forum. I tested it out multiple times on the same monster and the training dummies and measured specifically looked for the max damage done, ignoring crits and combat advantage. Then I pumped all 5 points into Snap Freeze and saw NO increase to my damage done.

I'm bummed that it's not working the way it should, but hopefully they will address this sooner than later.

Please for the love of your teams, stop doing that, you're only slowing down everything as it most likely will leave a lot of hurt critters scattered all over. Solo play, fine do whatever you want as long as it doesn't impact others negatively. Ice Storm is also a solo-only power for the same reason, Arcane Singularity is really the only daily you should consider in teams.

Steal Time is awesome and it's kinda sad that it got moved from level 17 (back before we could pick powers) to 45. Granted, it's no longer OMGWTFBBQ! 60-70% AP!, but it's still one of the best AoEs available to a CW.

Best end game build imo is chill strike tabbed, entangling snare, sudden storm and steal time. 3 stuns (1 an aoe), and our 2 best aoe damage outputs. I went full arcane, and have yet to be out damaged by a chill CW.
