I think people are happier testing OPEN BETA when companies sell their MMOS as 'official release'. Oh no wait..they still complain.:p
+1 to Cryptic for calling these 'releases' what it really is...open beta testing.
BS! At the end of ANY Beta they ALWAYS wipe EVERYTHING so when the REAL release goes live EVERYONE starts on a level playing ground. So, are they going to wipe anything past this point? NO!! So it's NOT Open Beta, period.

+1. This open beta only by name, what you are playing is the final release of the game. The only beta aspect to it is working out the correct server load because it happens in every MMORPG release (and some non-MMOs like a certain "Emulated Centre of Population" if you want a really bad release). In fact, interesting to see they labelled launch as beta knowing the servers will collapse or over-populate and plan to merge servers later on when the excess capacity isn't needed and people have drifted to other titles. Some lessons appear to have been learned from prior releases.
The opening of this game did feel very natural and polished for an early release though so high hopes for this title, provided it doesn't nickel and dime us players too much. It's smoother then some launches I have seen, I give Cryptic credit for that.

Its not written in stone that only because there are no character wipes..it can not be beta testing. All MMOS are nothing more than open beta at release no matter how much companies want you to believe that their game is complete and ready for release.
Cryptic is just being honest and not selling you that BS. All other so called 'official' releases that you have played over the years..guess what you were beta testing there too and there were no character wipes.

This is standard for all new MMO games. The forums at launch are always a mess. Give it a few weeks and they'll go away.
New? Hell it is standard for any MMO. No matter the game you'll always have the Eliteists, and the ragers in the forums. That will never change so there are only three options.
1: Don't read the forums.
2: Only read patch notes or official threads.
3: Learn to live with it.

*Yes open beta isn't real
*The colours red and black in the log in screen are to get you to buy more Zen.
*Cryptic is creating the lag to force you to buy the Hotn pack
*Jack Emmert just hired Elvis and Hendrix to score the 1st expansion pack which you will have to buy to be able to log in.
Heh. Heh heh heh heh. I had the guy in the next cubicle ask me what was so funny. Oh my gosh snorting with laughter.
But seriously, Elvis doesn't work for me, but Hendrix does... And where can I get that first expansion pack? ;-)

You are correct. I have experiance with Alpha & Beta testing and know this as fact.

I agree, but they did drop the ball knowing that they should have been better prepared for lag/server related issues. I mean really, it's not like they didn't know they were making an MMO, right? LOL.

Sorry to burst your bubble, princess, but I am willing to bet that a large portion of the whiners are adults. We have all become accustomed to getting things easier now and it has spawned a whole lot of entitled attitudes. I won't assume that the people whinging the loudest are kids though. I apologize for my cheek, but as a person who actually takes adderall for a real condition and is an adult, I took a wee bit of offense to being lumped in with a bunch of whiney mcwhinestiens.
I have a STO lifetime membership and therefore was granted access to most of the CLOSED beta. I know it was CLOSED because my wife also tried to log in and was denied access. She doesn't play STO and never received a closed beta email granting access. I took the liberty of looking up the definition of a beta as apparently some posters in this thread are unaware...
A beta test is a limited release of a product with a goal of finding bugs before the final release. Software testing is often referred to by the terms "alpha" and "beta."
Generally speaking, the alpha test is an internal test to find bugs, and the beta test is an external test. During the alpha phase, the product is opened up to employees of the company and, sometimes, friends and family. During the beta phase, the product is opened up to a limited number of customers.
Sometimes, beta tests are referred to as "open" or "closed". A closed beta test has a limited number of spots open for testing, while an open beta has either an unlimited number of spots (i.e. anyone who wants to can participate) or a very large number of spots in cases where opening it up to everyone is impractical.
My opinion is that April 30th was the start of the Open Beta...since, you know, they haven't had an open beta prior to April 30th.
Just my too sense.
I'm a lover not a fighter. But I'm also a fighter so don't get any ideas...
Hey Old Man...you ever see those stores that are..."going out of business"...and have been for 10 years? .....
yeah...their open beta is like that in that it really isnt open beta. They said they wont be wiping characters. To most, that's a live release. But, by calling it open beta, they have an excuse, an out....IT"S BETA!!11!!!1!!!!1 Of course, this goes right hand in hand with the scummy F2P model.
I'm just waiting to see the priority queue tokens show up in the cash shop.
Fair enough, but by your logic no iterative process will EVER be finished. MMO's are a whole different kettle of fish.
Also I would like to point out that I have not as of yet offered an opinion on how good or bad the game is at this point.
I try to be a realist, which for me means I knowingly spent money on a game that once "released" will continue to change and hopefully improve. If said game becomes so un-enjoyable that I can no longer handle the frustration, well lesson learned I guess.
I am not trying to say that companies should not be held responsible for sub-par products, what I am saying is that in this day and age of instant gratification, with this type of game it is unreasonable to expect a perfect game at launch.
When you design a game as a single player experience your potential variables are somewhat finite even within the pc world, even more finite when you have the luxury of desiging a game for a console where EVERY single person has the same hardware.
NOW take a game where not only are you dealing with a metric butt ton of system variables but network code and cross compatibility. Not to mention a player base who's play styles are so widely varied that you couldnt possibly account for all of the different scenarios that may crop up game play wise, you have increased the difficulty on an order of magnitude that is really pretty staggering.
So yes, I'm an older gamer and yes, as I stated in my original post this was a bit of a "get off my lawn" rant. BUT the massive amount of snap judgement and to my ears, whining is indicative of the the time and space we currently live in.
Do not interfere in the affairs of Dragons, for thou art crunchy and taste good with ketchup...
But this has all the hallmarks of an official release. Pre-order bonuses applied, money exchanging hands, no character wipes, communities bedding down in their respective servers for the long-run.
How can this be anything but official release? As I stated, beta by name not by actual existence.

This is an age of entitlement, that's one of the things that's wrong with the world. I used to work for a major cellular carrier, you wouldn't believe how many people just expect you to extend their bill without even making a $5 payment.
These are adults, btw. Don't be so quick to assume the ragers are all kids. Most of them are grown up, I'm sure.

Yes I agree with what you say here but many years back when companies' feet were held to the fire by paying gamers and where held somewhat responsible for what they put out, this BS Open Beta excuse was not exploited like it is today. I am not saying that ONLY because they are not doing a wipe that it is not Open Beta, it's just one of the MAJOR milestones. Bottom line is they just want to avoid the "Failed Launch" or "Problem Launch" at OUR cost.

I am not in the least bothered by you being bothered.Nowhere did I state that all Adderall patients were whiners. You implied I said that though.I simply made a commentary on the majority of our youth today and you decided to take righteous offense to my reference to a drug that I believe (more often than not) is used to treat teens for their simple lack of discipline. This however has absolutely nothing to do with you..obviously..since you are an adult.(or claim to be). So..the question now is..what else will you be slightly offended by?

To be fair, I did generalize in my original rant and meant no offense to anyone, and while I do agree that in many cases these med's are over prescribed especially in younger patients. The overall direction of instant gratification that society seems to be going sometimes provides an environment that breeds lack of focus. Also for those of us who have had A.D.D all our lives and have only recently been diagnosed and prescribed some of these meds, the difference in my day to day life, (at least for me) has been night and day.

This has been the very first MM launch I've had the chance to attend, due to a lack of work on that particular day and a testament to the interest that had been generated on the game in the previous few weeks. It was, as I understand it from others, not a smooth launch but certainly not one that could be considered disastrous. For me, a few hours waiting for launcher patches and then an hour or so waiting for the server maintenance to wrap up was unfortunate but not game breaking. Throughout all that time, I kept myself informed of every update (was well as informing friends wanting to play with me), worked on the RP side of my character, and read up on game world lore.
As for the log in ques, I figured out myself early on that it was a display bug (it was kinda obvious) and just waited patiently while browsing the Art subforum we have. When I did finally make it in game, without the game breaking server lag, I was quite pleased with the experience the game was giving. Spent more time investigating little nooks in Protector's Enclave and fooling around with players in Taverns than I did questing, from my recollection. Did try out one mini adventure from the foundry, which was an excellent experience.
So, in the end, I think that those who come in without the interest in some form of RP (light or otherwise, which I saw a few streamers ignore) or those who don't have the patience to let a company start working on new issues found in their game will be the first to leave. A small amount, I expect.
Is that such a bad thing in the end, for the rest of us?
To the Strongest!

it wasn't a disastrous launch because no one is playing a week later, from 3 pages of online people in my guild down to 5.
OK, first let me apologize if this comes off like a "get off my lawn yah rotten kids!" speech but....
Is it just me who actually got the email that this is an OPEN BETA phase?! Not for nuthin but the fact that the forums are filled with pre-adolescent nerd rage about "WTF did I pay for!" and "OMFG this game is the worst ever!" is a depressing sign of the time and space we live in.
Instant gratification and a gold release candidate quality is now (at least by some apparently) expected in an OPEN BETA??
I have played the game for all of about 5 hrs and you know what I think about the current state of the game? Well I DONT KNOW YET I have had 5 hrs to explore and check it out!
And for those of you who have had more time and have posed constructive criticism's good on ya. But to be honest I really hope that the whiners and troll's go find a bridge to live under in miserable discordance with one another...
There are most certainly bugs and issues that need to be hammered out but for those of you self entitled, all about me, A.D.D. addled folks.
Please, I beg of you, Rage quit now....
Ok so that totally sounds like a "get of my lawn" speech, sorry....
I was not there for the start of WoW.
But I was there for SWTOR.
Almost every critic about SWTOR was right and is still repeated by new players because the others have left by now.
The same is true for NWO.
Your vitriol is the worst of all, insulting and not constructive at all.
The only complaint that is total nonsense is the PvP balance issue.
By the very nature of things, there are always balance issues when playing different classes with different gear.
