Looking forward to this. Cleric is my mainstay for 80% of my toons while leveling, and I use the MaA for the others. I love the idea of "building" my comp rather then just buying them (though this will be more attractive once they actually fix the system they have in place for transferring comps)
Good job on getting this in game fast Cryptic. Now you need to fix the comp system so we can move/mail/sell our comps. At least a word on it's progress...im holding off on buying some as they aren't worth the price right now without having the option of porting them. fix what you got there cryptic, and you'll have a nice comp system in development. As of right now it's just a hinderance.
Fast ? Somehow my definition for fast, for a feature they say the game is designed around, is something different. The problem will remain that the companions have zero AI and i doubt they will be any cheaper than the ZEN store ones at all, so not really much gained for a lot of cash.

Funny, I thought the game was designed around D&D.
all joking aside, i get your point. it's not a motivational feeling to hop into a game, see it tell you you can level and trade your comps, only to find out you can't. but I see the game as being out for 3 weeks at this point....based on it's official release. if the content update is mid august, that puts it right around 2 months...not bad for a content release and some major changes to systems in the game. if they also fix allot of the bugs on the way, even better (they should...certainly plenty of bugs that need critical attention). none of this is game breaking. It's quite important to me...but the game is still playable. so 2 months isn't bad....I've seen far worse.
Thats of course IF they actually fix all this stuff having those silly scrolls to "level" up my comp to a green or blue sitting there teasing me feels almost insulting when there's no mention of progress to a resolution...at least take the darned things out of the game if its taking longer then expected. But i don't' see a 2 month window as a bad time frame for a content release.
On the note of usefulness: totally subjective. I find that the cleric meet my needs in many ways, more then the two store comps I've tried. So it would be worth it to me to upgrade her. and cost is relative...they're stated purpose is to metric the cost so it's progressive...so your not looking at an insane upfront cost just to get away from a basic companion. whether we think they're prices are reasonable or not will have to wait till they show us what they are actually selling for
