Let me see if I got this right. I am a founder and I got that wolf that say max lvl 30 and they gave me a companion that says max lvl 15. Both of these will be useless around 5 lvls about their max. So to continue with a pet/companion, we have to buy their pets or companions for a boat load of money.
Is this correct?
Does their companion/pet level as high as my avatar?

Pet (companions really) levels aren't quite the same as player levels. 30 is the highest a companion can get, but that's no slouch, and takes a good bit of training. Some don't even really feel that good until their 20's too. I'm at 55, my fire bird is 26, and i stopped using the healer (max 15) a few levels ago as the bird starting picking up in usefulness. Not sure the exact conversion, but think of it as their level as twice what it says. Some are more useful longer, others you'll want to just train when you turn in quests to get them where they are more useful. Long story short, you'll start with a free one if you have a pack, and get another free one from a quest around level 16. That's all you really "need".
