... to understand what RP is all about? I'm not new to MMOs by any stretch, but have never really bothered to look into what RPing in an MMO actually IS. Now that I'm playing a D&D game, I find myself curious to understand what it is you RPing folk actually do in an MMO as RPers that is different than what a non-RPer does.
Is it just time taken to craft a backstory and how you dialogue with your fellow RPers? Or something more than that? Is questing/leveling part of the RP or separate? How does one know when RPing is "on" or "off?" Does the Foundry factor in to much of what you folks are doing?
Thanks very much in advance. I appreciate the time taken by anyone who can help illuminate this subject for me.

Here you go
Role playing is defined as pretending to be someone else or pretending to be in a specific situation that you are not actually in at the time.(verb)
An example of role playing is when you pretend that your friend is your boss and you have a practice conversation in which you ask for a raise.
An example of role playing is when you and your spouse pretend to be out on a first date, even though you have been married for ten years.
In a nutshell...it's acting. Johnny Depp is not Jack Sparrow IRL. He assumed that persona for the movies. I am not Iriadraee Moonshadow IRL. I assume that persona in D&D games.
Typically people use some kind of punctuation to denote an RP line or emote such as...*She sauntered up to the lecherous Bard, smiled sweetly and promptly poured her entire glass of wine over his head* <---RP emote
OOC-Hey (insert guildmates name here) How's it going today? <---OOC chit chat.
