Ok well not really since this is in written form - but, same sentiment...
A somewhat cynical (I guess you could call it) thought just occurred to me whilst staring at my name and avatar here on the forums -
"Hero of the North" it says. And why does it say that? Because I gave them (Cryptic) money. I'm a "hero" because I gave some company money. I don't feel like a hero. I feel more like a mercenary - not that I have any problem with paying for a product or giving money to companies - it's just that.. that TITLE just irks me when I think about it. I'd rather be called "Mercenary of the North" because that feels more accurate at first glance.
But then again I'm the one paying them, so I wouldn't even be a mercenary.. I'd be - idk - a "Investor of the North". Lol.. that doesn't sound very cool but it certainly fits.
I just don't like the idea of cheapening a title like hero by receiving it for nothing more than handing out cash.
I mean, even in the game world, you're not a hero just because you paid money. A player's character should only even be considered a hero in the game world if that player has accomplished great and mighty feats - of courage and strength or cunning and daring. Even the virtual form of the word or the title is cheapened by the practice of handing it out as a reward for monetary donations.
It's still cool to have the colorful little forum title - to differentiate me from all the other people who weren't willing/capable of ponying up the cash to support the game, mind you.
It kind of reminds me of just how much of a commercial world we live in. Again, nothing wrong with commercialism as long as it doesn't become the all-consuming chase after the mighty dollar that is no longer a means to an end, but an end unto itself.
There are more important things in life than chasing money - like being a real Hero - the single parent who works double jobs to make ends meet and put food on the table for their children; The fireman who risks his own life to pull someone from a burning building; Someone who fights, and possibly dies, protecting their country, their home, their family from outside threats to their basic human freedoms.
"Hero of the North". Ya.. not quite.
