I'm curious about this too, usually the forum is full of people tagging shards as unofficial this, or unofficial that... I've not seen anything like that so far for NWO.

doesn't matter, just choose one. When first wave goes down they will merge all of them into one. There are more just for the launch to avoid complete overload.

Yeah I thought I read they had a super server or something for the game, thanks!
No special purpose on our end for any of the shards on our end. Like Foxspirit says above, some players have decided on where they will hold some of their RP events. In the future we hope to merge all shards together. For now now, they're just there to spread out the load so that our servers survive the many players we are expecting during Head Start and Open Beta.
I really dislike server merges... they always end up with someone already having my characters name, and then I have to change... >.< It's never the other way around for me. Having the name, and someone else having to change theirs because I had it first. >.>

The current infrastructure allows you to keep your name. Multiple people can have the same name in Neverwinter, just like in Dungeons and Dragons, and real life.
It is your account handle (which is also your forum name) that allows you to be uniquely identified by your friends and the system.

Ah good... more mmos should be doing this.

The main thing to do is find out what one your guild/friends are going to and go that one.

I don't know about the others, but I think Mindflayer is supposed to be the unofficial RP shard. Of course, that won't matter when the shards merge.

I'm sorry, but I read your name as death rap, instead of death trap. >.> letters... they always move around on me.

On the realm I play on in Wow, RP means something very specific in the Lions Pride Inn, Elwynn Forest. Seriously it's a hoot in there. Worth the sub by itself. Can I be your gnome slave btw?

RP and ERP are two totally different can of worms. :P

For anyone who is looking for more details on how shards work in Neverwinter, I would recommend checking out the FAQ: http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?18401-Neverwinter-Extended-FAQ&p=297631&viewfull=1#post297631
