I have missed all the beta weekends and didn't get a chance to find out about this on my own, so maybe you guys could enlighten me.
From what I've learned, companions can level up (or gain ranks) as you use them. They gain experience, you send them into training, they come back with a higher rank. And their maximum rank is capped depending on their "quality", i.e. white, green, blue, purple. Did I get this part right?
Is there a possibility to upgrade them (e.g. from green to blue), therefore raising their maximum possible rank? I believe I have read you can do so with mounts, so how about companions? Let's say I really like the basic wolf companion, but the wolf is just blue or green and I really want to keep him and max him out - is there some way to make him purple? Are there upgrades?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
They're not called respect tokens...

|In beta weekend 4 when they changed them to have limits to rank (level) based on Quality (also called rank funny enough) there where items in the Pet store that upgrades them prices unknown as they only had 'coming soon' on them.

Yes.
Companions gain Experience Points just like you, though they average half what your character has.
They also have training levels based on color value:
White (common) can train up to level 15
Green (uncommon) can train up to level 20
Blue (rare) can train up to level 25
Purple (very rare) can train up to level 30
The rarity refers to how often you might find these in "loot drops" or via "other than vendor" - these colors also relate to "value" as per "capability". However you can buy all versions from vendors or Z-Store.
Note that you can also "train" a low value to the next higher value, for example: train a green to a blue. But it is unclear how much that will cost (and it is assumed the currency will be Astral Diamonds). So if the companion you really want isn't available at the rarity you really want, there are ways to make it so.
So wait, if I am 60, my companion will max out at level 30? That's kind of terrible.
The level values for companions seems to be quite different from the player's value. So while a 30 companion will never be as strong as a lvl 60 player it should be sufficiently strong to aid the character to kill level 60 mobs quicker.

I saw somewhere (interview, news, whatever, don't remember) that the founder companions and mounts are max rank (+3), so there will be no need to upgrade them.

Companians levels are not the same as player levels and are called ranks, a rank 340 companion is really a lvl 60 one.

Actually, I'm not going to do that. Or why do you think I wanted to know if I can upgrade companions which aren't purple right out of the box?
I just asked myself the same

What is so terrible about it?
Only if it's of Purple value/quality.
