Shield Companion doesn't roots itself in combat

The Shield companion bought from the AD vendor follows just fine, but as soon as combat is started, it stays put and doesn't engage unless I path a mob to it. Even then, it still stays rooted even thought the mob may move away from it. So, I have to keep pulling the mob back to the spot the shield plants itself for combat.
