The STO lockboxes are the same as these and in practice are the same as the GW2 Black Lion Chests. 100% chance to get garbage with a 0.1% chance for something good and a 0.01% chance for something awesome. Some people have luck. I do not. I'll be either stashing them away until the economy gets me a good price for them, or just giving them to strangers.
Well, the gw2 blc didnt have anything good in them at all :P
100% of the STO lockboxes have something good in them. Whether that something is worth $1.25 (or 1.8 million EC) to you is a personal question, but 100% of them have at least 4 Lobi. There are people who would gladly pay $1.25 in a straight-up transaction for 4 Lobi. Not as many as buy a lockbox key, but some.
100% of the NW lockboxes will have (some number, I think it's 10, but that could be wrong) of Tarmalune Trade Bars in them. Whether that's worth $1.25 to you or not is a personal question, but it is an item with a defined use, and therefore "useful" by any objective definition.

The price of things in lockboxes is totally based on community economy unless they place something really crappy and useless to be in 99% of boxes. Otherwise community will place price for each item on lockboxes based on supply and demand.
Will the lockboxes give items based on your current level when you open it or the level you were when you found it? If it's the former, then it might make sense to save opening the boxes until you hit max level unless you are mainly trying to get Tarmalune Trade Bars.
Ehh... lockboxes were also the primary reason I stopped playing STO, and that was only a month or two ago. I threw away 10+ a day, then just stopped playing when I realised I would never be as strong as anyone who threw money at the system.
The pay2win is strong in STO. That didn't stop me from having an awful lot of fun while I played it, but it did stop me from continuing to play it further.
Really? I quit STO because nothing got any better, just different. It was solely storyline driven with the possibility for "different" items. My Buddie is still there playing it. His gear is no better now than when I stopped over a year ago. It's just a gear to target a different shield type / armor now than mine and a complete set of it.
