Whats the real difference between Assassin and Trickster Rogue in 4E? After looking through skills they both appear to essentially do samething. Both utilize shadow magic, and both utilize stealth. Is it possible for both of these to coexist in Neverwinter Online or too similar?
IMO the closest thing to Assassin we'll see in NWO is a rogue paragon path, Shadow Assassin. Prior to the Assassin class being released in a Dragon magazine, that was the only type of assassin available.
Based on the classes they started with, and the ones that are rumored to be coming up, it sounds like they are going strictly by the Player Handbooks, so once they finish with the classes in PHB1, maybe we'll see some from 2 and 3.
TL;DR, I'd love to see material added from the Dragon magazines, but realistically I'm thinking they'll go by the player handbooks.
I feel like I learned something today. Thanks, Heathen and Gilrimm.

The major difference is their power source. As a martial class, the Rogue's power comes from training and practice. The Assassin, however, traded a part of their soul to the Shadowfell in exchange for power. This is reflected in their powers, like the fact that the Assassin utilizes poisons.
Ultimately, they can play similarly, but are different takes on the same idea. The Rogue class has more builds available to go in different directions, however.
I think the Assassin is too similar to the rogue to be its own class in this game when there are so many other classes and play styles unrepresented to utilize first.

Trickster Rogue and Assassin are a lot more distinct in 4E PnP. For example, Deft Strike in PnP is just a "move 10' and attack", not a teleport. Neverwinter adds a lot of shadow magic flavor to the Rogues abilities. Assassins in PnP get teleports and shadow magic, not Rogues.

So instead of ever adding Assassin they just make Trickster Rogue with a Assassin type Paragon Path

Trickster rogue is a recommended lvl 1 build for Rogue class which is based on martial power source.
