Being a rogue is not only about assassinations and traps - most of it is about kleptomaniac habits of rogues.
Best of the rogue characters in Forgotten realms become rich very soon, but they are unable to stop stealing. Sometimes they spend much more just to steal a gem.
Recently, one member of our group made a kleptomaniac ranger. One of the NPC in our campaign ran a "not so fine establishment" in waterdeep(black market). Whenever he would enter, he would try to steal something and the DM would catch him before he left. He would pay the fine.
In the end he spent money a few times over the shop's worth.
Do you have a character like that and a story of his/her habit to share too?
I'm a Dragonlance reader, not Forgotten Realms. In Dragonlance it was an entire race that were Kleptomaniacs: halflings that were called Kenders. They were genuine Kleptomaniacs in that they would steal without even realizing it or knowing it and actually be quite surprised if they were caught.
I figured on playing my halfling in this way - like a Dragonlance Kender. And I am preparing a couple Foundry missions that will have Kender-like halflings where you (the player) will find things or have things given to you, then when you need it most will discover it's missing and your "Kender" follower will *just happen* to "also have one of those" that just so happens to look identical to the one you "lost".
Kleptomaniac Kenders were my favorite race through the entire Dragonlance series, the primary character in the first books was Tasslehoff Burrfoot.
a friend of mine "accidentially" stole a dwarf baby once. And when he returned it to the parents, he was heralded as hero and collected the reward.
We were never quite sure how or why he stole the baby in the first place. Mind you this same guy, as his first action as a character got a 100% critical fail trying to stab a spider that was climbing on his chest, and stabbed himself in the heart... >_>
