Suppose so... *shrug* Kudos to the realists, any/all of em :) People who claim it's going to be competitive vs. the GF don't seem to take everything into account tbh. *hugs Vixen*

Considering it was never anything competetive versus the two. People seem to have twisted the original thread as such which is a shame.

I repeated nothing that he said. You must be getting things mixed up somewhere in there. I still aim to be main tanking if the possibility is there. But I am fully aware that I can never compete with a GF. That was never what this thread was about as the OP stated. But somehow seem to skew the entire post into a GWFvsGF which is never what it was intended as.

The OP started the thread comparing it too a GF in the defender role further stating the class was meant to be a defender and that expecting it to be a striker is somehow wrong.

I personally don't believe it to be a second rate striker, but I do believe it is a second rate defender.

Oh Indeed. I never said that I'd want to "compete" with the GF. People only jump to hasty conclusions. If I end up in a group with a GF I sure as heck won't try and demand his spotlight as the main tank. People should just try to calm down and realize that we actually refer to the GWF being more of a defender than a striker like the TR. I will, like I said over and over, try to main tank where possible however!

Just to keep things rolling I would like to state that I will continue the work on acting as a tank with the Great Weapon Fighter and continually try to improve a build that is suitable for the task. I will post guides on here in written form as well as have youtube videos up and running once the game has been live for a while.

I wish you the best of luck, but man, when I look over the GF defensive stuff it is just a ton better. It has better heals, taunts, aggro, mitigation, etc., the only thing GWF has an advantage with is mobility.

Hopefully they will improve GWF tanking abilities.

You two have to find and play with each other. GWF main tank GF pure dps! :D

Indeed! I still believe it can be done! But yet again, I am not trying to replace the GF in any way. Just trying to think outside the box and breaking the very solid boundaries people have set for the classes.

just to clear something up "defender" is a dnd term and not exactly equivalent to a "tank" mmo term. defender im mmo terms encompasses both tanks and off tanks people who want agro and can take a hit, I think some people are taking this to mean your straight up stand there and soak up damage meat shield mmo tank.
    Stop. Please, just stop.

Yes NW is an action MMO, however the game designers made a very conscious decision that you stop moving when you attack as melee. You make a full on commitment to the attack that will hold you there as long as you're attacking unless you hit your escape key to get out.

What this does mean though is that as mentioned earlier the GWF is an active mitigation tank. You'll gain large amounts of passive resistance through proper use of unstoppable and any attacks built around building up that meter as fast as possible. Also as was noted there are many talent choices you can make that grant increased resistance based on using various abilities as well.

Does this mean that you'll not be using your abilities to reposition mobs and escape damage?

NO! Of course not, that would be insanely stupid. Rather it's that instead of just kiting about auto-attacking, GWFs get the hell out of the way for any big red circles or sweeping attacks by lieutenant class baddies. Which is far different than the GF who can sit through and block them.

pointed to memorythought's post .. the gwf is a extreamly mobile fighter ...it is true you are rooted during your "at will" attacks but your daily skills give you the ability to close gaps and make them quickly and often.

with the gwf abilitly to generate aoe agro its is entirely POSSIBLE for a gwf to main tank for a group in the absence of a gf . and with the team of gf main tank and gwf off tank working together assuming cleric agro is fixed they would have no problem holding agro from a whole swarm of mobs.

I don't think anyone is arguing that a gwf would main tank for a group that has a gf.

main tank = hold boss mobs
off tank = hold everything else

i play dps. i have no interest in playing a caster or a tank or a healer, i like to be the best or one of the best dps in my group, and if im not but im still doing my job well then thats ok with me too, so i have no personal experience tanking or anything i just thought i would share my opinion on the matter as someone who wont be playing either a passive or an active tank. i think the gwf tank is interesting but peronsally a "neat and controlled" battlefield is much more appealling to me, whether its because the cc has everything locked down or because its all beating on the tank, whos job is to keep aggro off of me either by taking damage or avoiding it or whatever (frankly i consider cc essentially as tanks for non boss fights...). when stuff is running around i get really irritated because most of the time mobs have major speed bonuses for...whatever the reason is... and so if someone is kiting them or pushing them all over the place then i have to keep up with the mobs and anticipate the next ability my tank is going to use while using my own abilities. thats doable but i just find it soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo annoying when it isnt necessary. its not a traditionalist or tunnel vision or min/max thing i just dont like chasing. its not fun.
