Massive UI-based Performance leak?

So I turned on FPS with /showfps 1

In the protectors enclave, I get around 54-58 FPS on average.

...Then I hit the B key, and jumped up to 103 FPS minimum, even while running around.

I thought I was crazy, and maybe it was unrelated. So I did it again and again. Same thing.

Then I opened up more windows with the UI enabled, such as the inventory and journal. The FPS dropped dramatically down to 28 fps max.

This appears to be a massive performance based issue with the UI. I could see 10-12 fps difference because you're rendering my character portrait as 3d. Otherwise you're just rendering some flat images, which should take no GPU performance at all.

I tested disabling the UI in a few other games to see if they had the same thing, including the terribly optimized FFXIV 2.0 beta. None of them have the 100% improvement that I see in NW when disabling the UI. (or 50% reduction of performance, depending on how you look at it).

So then I went over to my STO account and tried it there. Same thing. I had a friend of mine in STO attempt it, and he received the same performance improvements.

Is there a chance someone at Cryptic could elaborate on this? Is there a reason your engine is going crazy when rendering a primarily 2D UI to the tune of 50% performance? If you're doing some sort of crazy particle effects in the background on the UI that we can't see, can we get a Cryptic game wide (or at least in NW) option to disable these effects?

Any and all information you can provide is appreciated.

    As an aside: Anyone else willing to test the scenario I gave above(disable FPS limiter, turn on /showfps 1, record average, then hit B, record average), and then post their results?

    This is interesting to me. I'll test it next time I get the chance. I have 2 rigs I can test it on. Mostly I'm interested because generally the UI is one of the things in MMOs that player made mods can really change. So maybe someone will cook something up that doesn't reduce performance as drastically as this.

    News to me. I'll add it to the list of possible issues. Can't guarantee that I can get the info you're looking for, but I can pass this along to the graphics developers for them to investigate alongside the other issues that are reported during beta.

    This happens to me as well, I found that hiding the mini-map gives me an extra 10-15 fps.

    I just tested it in the city, face against a corner of a building, looking at the ground. UI disabled via keybind: 102 fps, UI enabled: 70.

    Edit:
    All video options maxed, except for anti-aliasing which is disabled, and I have enabled DX11.
    System: Windows 8 Pro 64-bit, Intel i7-2600K, 16 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 690 (drivers 314.21).

    Im going to check this out later on, and I appreciate the info, and was wondering why the game seemed to run so crapy even though the graphics r not that good.

    I haven't tested this specifically, but I can certainly say that opening up a bunch of menus slows my FPS down to a crawl.

    I noticed a ~10 fps improvement when disabling the UI. However even with the UI disabled I get 30 fps average in the city. I have a quite old CPU (a Core 2 Quad @ 2.83) and a current gen graphics card, but since the recommended requirements are a Core 2 Duo @ 2.8 and a 8800 I expect to get higher fps in the final release.. The graphics are good, but it looks likes the game is mostly cpu dependant or poorly optimized.

    I experienced this myself.

    I also experienced a massive performance decrease when a battle is anywhere near water. Was in a dungeon where there was dripping underground waterfalls and the moment when anyone on the team anywhere near standing water or dripping water got into a fight, suddenly my frames dropped to 10fps. Seriously it was terrible. Didn't happen anywhere else.

    Dezstravus: Thank you greatly for the response, and the assistance. It's a bit mind boggling, as I'm not seeing any shaders being used on the UI or, well, anything really that should cause this kind of performance drop.

    Here's hoping it's something easily remediable.

    If folks could keep posting the UI on/off FPS, it'd be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for all your feedback. Our UI CPU performance is definitely not where we want it to be right now, and we will be doing our best to improve it. We will continue to focus on this after ship until it is no longer an issue.

    Guys this is not trolling but I play NW in lowest setting (I admit I am using bad apu though w/ decent gpu). The highest framerate I could get is 30 and on Enclave it's about 5-15 fps. So what bothers me is that the graphics is already at its worst but the performance gain has no effect. That should give us an idea of how the optimization of the game engine is being tackled.

    This is a VERY VERY LONG STANDING issue with the UI in general for ALL Cryptic titles.

    The UI causes a MAJOR FPS hit. Always has. No doubt always will be.

    This bug has been around in CO since launch. Has been around in STO since launch. No doubt it'll be in NW since launch once it launches.

    Case in point - during the major overworld boss fights in CO (Tako fights, among other things), the solution to seeing your FPS drop from 60+ down to 10 or less is to turn off all damage floaters and names over players. There isn't a FPS problem seeing all the players in one spot (more or less) - it's all the numbers the UI draws that kills things.

    Again, this solution to this bug has been around in CO since LAUNCH. And shows no sign of it being fixed ever, as it plagues STO as well (although it's very rare seeing 20+ players all in one spot beating on one mob, so it's not quite as obvious).

    As of last time I played STO, you could see it in the Foundry missions, too. Open up the entire Foundry listing (Search - All) and watch your FPS drop like a rock despite most of the text being hidden off panel.

    Good luck fixing this. I doubt it'll happen.

    Laserduck, thank you so much for giving a heads up/acknowledgement on this.

    As somebob has mentioned (and as I saw when testing in CO/STO), this appears to be an underlying thing with the Cryptic Engine.

    I sincerely hope that a resolution can be found within Neverwinter, that could then potentially be brought over to the other Cryptic games (although I would be happy even if it could only be resolved in just Neverwinter.) The UI being the number one noticeable performance killer is a bizarre and saddening thing to see, so all the luck to you and your team.

    (And here's hoping we can get updates in regards to the status of resolution on it?)

    I just made another thread in the tech support graphics subforum about this because its just ridiculous. At its worst I have seen it as low as 35 and by pressing B it easily jumps to 50. Completely unacceptable. Even worst is you cant disable the part of the hud that looks most demanding, which is the nav bar up at the top. I have the keys memorized for each function so why cant I disable that pos?
