Are you gimping your character by not using a companion? Really liking this class but hate playing with pets. Can you go down a path where you dont need to use a sidekick to be the best you can be? Thanks!

Yes you will NEED one to solo.

If you want to team up with another player, then you are fine without one.

But to solo the game assumes a companion and use of healing potions.

    What he said^
E.G: I am a rogue so I find my self low on health on some occasions,
If I have no potions or if they are on cooldown I cen use my cleric's pet healing and continue to slash into oblivion!
Or I could use man at arms to be my shield while I slash into oblivion.
One can't just slash into oblivion all by himself!

It's nice to have a tanking companion as a rogue so you can get combat advantage easier.

You don't need one, they can be good to have around but they don't contribute enough to make or break you. Some have more value than others, such as the man at arms over the cleric. The cleric doesn't heal that great, but the Man at Arms can be your meatshield giving you CA.

No, at least not against PvE mobs.
As long as a companion can do even 1 damage to an enemy or heal you for 1 damage, you will be better off having that companion.

Kantorek: Yeah.. you should try it. It's awesome.

I enjoyed having my cleric on my back. I save all of my potions now and they are stacking up in my inventory for true emergencies only. I hear we do not really even need the healing later, but I am going to try and solo hard content in the future (level 60ish) so I want the ability to have someone that can heal me and themselves if needed. Also while healing their-selves, they essentially become a tank as well. (Level 24, one day experience with level 9 cleric)

When you stealth, you drop aggro, so if you have a pet , the mobs go to it by default. Its kind of like having your pets hp as temp hp.

My rogue was in stealth for the majority of my fights and I did well enough with the striker mercenary dps companion taking hits for me.

How do you stay in stealth all the time? I am very new to the game and know I could get more out of that skill.

I think the companion is an awesome game mechanic. You will need it to solo some content. I just hope they have more customization for them later on.

Not ALL the time, but most of the time is pretty easy. First make sure you have shadow strike set up as one of your abilities (refresher stealth meter). Also if you have your daily set to Lurkers Assault (stealth meter regens like crazy) you can pretty much take down any mob group while solo questing.

From what I've encountered in my experience - and from what others are saying - yes, companions are a fairly vital part of soloing...

Has a fair amount of bite to it if you happen to be RPing a loner, I'd imagine.

I used the cleric companion and it was awesome, saved me alot of pots. But I will get the panther companion from the pack and Iwould like to use that, I hope it will be as usefull as the cleric was.
