Played beta last weekend and never got enough experience to get a companion.
It seems hard to get much info on them.
I know you get a free one at level 16, but can you pay for one earlier?
Do they level with you?
How is the ai?
When they die what happens?
How do you heal them?
Can you command them?

Yes, with Zen. Do they level with you?
Yes, but they always stay a little behind. All companions start at level1. How is the ai?
Tough question, the meele usually go for the 'boss' first and try to take agro, the ranged (i.e. cleric) seem to stay back but sometimes run close to the monster as well and usually die there. When they die what happens?
They resurrect at the spot as soon as the encounter is finished (either the monsters or you are dead) How do you heal them?
As you would heal other players. Can you command them?
NO
I think if you got the 2 gold or so you can buy a companion earlier than lvl 16. And ya, if your at lvl 1 and want to buy a companion from the zen market, you can.

Sure, if it is a twink or something and you got tons of gold
I hit 2 gold at ~level20 and spent it on a mount, there were 20 or 30 silver left... AFAIR
Thank you for the answer.
I was just wondering because I played a control wizard to level 15 and was having a tough time.
He probably wouldn't have been as hard to play if he didn't always walk around with two fingers in front of him.
Or if I just bought a companion for the early levels.
When you say a companion starts at level 1, you don't mean you need to level him up (like hunter pets in wow), correct?
All companions start at level1. If you are level 16, then you get a level1 companion.
As they get more experienced, you can send them away for training.
While they are on training, you cannot summon them (you can rush the training with Astral Diamonds).
Once the training is finished, they return in a new level. They have better stats and some gain additional skills.
The training takes ~30 seconds from Level1 -> Level2. From 9-10 was >20min I think...
They still get experience, even if you do not send them to training. What I didn't try, but will next time, is to leave them in that level and once you send them to training as Level1, could they come back as Level3?
