Hello, I noticed something playing the beta of Neverwinter... With its, lets say it like it is, really dated graphics, how can Neverwinter be this GPU intensive ?
I first discovered it because my computer fan kept going louder than usual while I was playing the game. I do not have any graphical trouble with the actual game, I have really good frame rates, I never lag, BUT I checked my temperatures and whenever I play the game, my GPU skyrockets automaticallyto 65-70C (one second it's idle at 45-55C, I open Neverwinter and two minutes later it's at 65+C )... I never had these kind of temperatures playing game with ten-twenty times better graphics... My fan is always stuck at 1500-1600 rpm... I don't get it, is the game just not well conceived for some graphic cards ?
I have a GTX 460 ( not good, I know, I need to buy myself a new 680 or something... )
It's due to the state of the beta code. It doesn't matter what something looks like to the user, load is load. When something "isn't optimized" it causes extra strain. That strain, on a GPU, turns into heat, which turns into fan speed.
If you don't know what that means, think of a book who's pages are completely out of order. Let's say it's a very small book, maybe 100 pages total. If you are reading it over and over and over, that flipping back and forth all the time will make you very tired very quickly. If the book were re-ordered correctly you would be flipping smoothly as you went through it each time, not back and forth over multiple pages. Same thing here.
As the game gets closer to release it will get more optimized and we won't see heat spikes like this. (Unless it just doesn't get correctly optimized.)
It could be worse. Back in the days of the Auto Assault early alpha, it was heating up people's systems so badly that you had to literally open your case and blow a house fan on it to keep it cool enough to play. 90% of people's systems heated up so badly they would shut down from heat in less than an hour. heh.
I did not notice problems with my Nvidia gt 540m, which is not exactly top of the line. No fans going at full speed just to keep my laptop cool, but i haven't played with the graphics settings yet, i just used the recommended preset. If i can get into Beta 3 i will try and see if i can get my laptop howling.
