I'd be willing to wager that the 16 years that Drizzt existed before you began roleplaying the drow race had a significant impact on the popularity of said race.

It was the race and culture that Drow fans like, which started with Drizzt true but there are other books about Drow that doesn't have Drizzt in them.

I'm 43 years old and play exclusively because of RA Salvatore's amazing character he created, nothing else. Every since I read that book 20 some odd years ago I have patterened all my characters in every game allowable to come as close to Drizzt as possible.
Every character in ever MMO ive ever created is dark skinned and gray haired.

I have no doubt that people enjoy the drow race and culture, outside of drizzt. But I have trouble believing this means anything much more on a fundamental level than roleplaying ruthless and evil, which I'm not sure has a great place in an MMO whose primary story involves protecting a goodly town, foundry notwtihstanding(although the foundry still operates from within the town and its environs.)

Your sarcasm is not lost on me. I'm sure some people actually do feel that way and even if you were being genuine, there's really nothing wrong with that. I've noticed a lot of people like to bash Drizzt fans for lack of originality, but does it really matter?

True the main quest line Neverwinter is for heroes, but there is the foundry and evil gods are being added from what I was told.
The best-roleplaying you can get online is in Neverwinter Nights games, Baldur's gate NW2 rp server has surfacers battling underdark characters. Its heavy role-playing but its still going strong for those that want to check it out.

If I recall the interview correctly in which this was discussed(the NOCS) it was more of a "its something we'll look into" not a "we're definitely going to add the evil gods." Beyond that you're going to be starting in a tutorial, the gist of which is that you're defending the town from a particular baddie. Now it is true that evil fights evil on a regular basis, but I have trouble believing that an evil character would so readily ally with a goodly town for this to occur.
As far as the foundry is concerned, you could choose to only accept missions from evil NPCs(or missions which don;'t involve NPCs at all, which are possible) but you'd still be getting your supplies(initially anyway) from good merchants and be hanging out in a good town, unless you strictly hold your character to places that are lawless, everywhere that isn't Protector's Enclave basically, which is a pretty big stretch of the game.

I understand where you are coming from, my guild is not overtly evil its more like how the thayan enclaves were set-up role-playing wise. We are more chaotic neutral and all the drow characters in the guild are outcasts and hate Lolth. You can still be evil and exist in a lawful setting, you just have to hide it.

Just because someone is evil does not mean they don't fight evil sometimes. Look at a pack of evil mercenaries or even a single evil mercenary. They work for the goodies some times and even buy from the vendors and hang out in their taverns, evil doesn't have to mean psychotically crazy, there is smart evil. There are evil HAMSTER in the real world that use the stores the rest of us use, eat at the same restaurants and even work in the same work places, why should a fantasy would be less demented.

I wouldn't call it smart and dumb evil, I would call it evil that can blend in and evil that can't blend in. A evil human can get by pretty well in a human settlement just by not doing anything overtly evil in front of people that care about such things. Whereas a frost giant isn't going to be going into a human settlement and buying from the merchants and eating with good races. Same with drow, although this has been lessened in Forgotten Realms from how it used to be.
As far as working for goodies, that may be true of evil races that can blend in, its almost invariably not true of the races that can't.
It will be incredibly difficult game wise for these drow that want to play evil(or close to it) to believably hide it, especially since people are inherently predisposed to view drow as evil. I'm way more comfortable with Drizzt clones than I am with drow who want to play like actual drow.

There are places in the city not controlled by the Neverwinter government. There is even a orc controlled tavern where evil characters can make a place to hang out and get contacts for foundry missions.

Which is what I alluded to in my initial response(about all the areas outside of Protector's Enclave pretty much being more or less lawless.) You still potentially run into the problem of the fact that your character starts out the game in Protector's Enclave and has to run the tutorial(it may be skippable though which would be helpful in running foundry only content.) I'm not saying it can't be done, but you're going to an awful lot of trouble to avoid a slew of in game content just to roleplay a certain way.

Neverwinter is letting in Drow refugees , evil drow will most certainly use that fact to gain access to the city. You just can't walk around openly doing evil things which your are right about if where going by logic in role-playing.
