The dashing duelist!

So we only have one "tank" in the game it seems, pity. But what if we had another? I demand a dashing duelist class! Complete with gleeming Rapier sword, loose colorful outfit, and fluffy feathered hat! A tank who grabs aggro and then deftly avoids hits rather than soaking them up!

Possible ability list:

At will abilities:

Double Strike: Strike the target twice in quick succession. Every third use of this ability in a row will deal a third attack.

Piercing Thrust: Quickly run your enemy through, dealing damage and incurs a stacking AC debuff

Flashing Steel: Deftly strike your foe while dazzling them with your shining sword, reducing the chance they have to strike you or an ally for a single attack. Consecutive attacks increase the number of attacks effected.

Encounter abilities:

Lunge: Bravely lunge towards a target, striking the first enemy you hit taunting that enemy and increasing your defensive stats for a few seconds

Swift kick: Kick your enemy in the chest, knocking them back and dealing damage. Enemies that are casting or channeling are instead knocked down.

Crowd Pleaser: After killing an enemy, gain a charge of crowd pleaser. Activating this ability will increase the movement speeds and attack speeds of nearby allies. Duration based on charges expended.

Daily powers:

Bravado: Loudly boast of your exploits, taunting all nearby enemies and increasing your armor class for a few seconds

Signature move: Your next encounter ability ignores it's cooldown, does not incur a cooldown and will deal additional damage. If Crowd Pleaser is used after Signature move, it's duration is extended and it's effects are amplified.

Coup De Grace: Build up your focus for two seconds before leaping at your target enemy, dealing massive damage. Damage is increased based on the enemies remaining health.

Well both fighter builds will be able to tank since the Fighter is classified as a Defender. They just go about it differently.

How do we know they'll actually work that way in game?

Well its more likely to work than it is to get a rogue tank in game right now. :)

I don't know about 4e, but Rogues have always been interesting anti-Wizard tanks, easily evading fireballs left and right whereas, a Fighter would just try to soak it up with his much higher health pool.

Sorry, I couldn't resist taking the opening, rogue and all :D
Maybe it could come about with TR and playstyle? Using attacks to daze, keep their attention, then keep moving. Using Bait and Switch at the start of a fight to hold aggro while the rogue goes wild to build up aggro and deal as much damage as possible. Then once it turns on them employ dodges and other evasive tricks? I did see a feat that increased stamina regen in one of the playtest videos.

I just always liked the idea of being a rapier wielding master swordsmen type with an awesome poofy hat. As to how you described it, sounds excellent!

Me too, and I hope we get rapiers here. Dual wielding them (since we're dual wielders) would look pretty interesting I think :)

Meh I dunno about dual wielding. Personally the idea doesn't really jive. Not that I want to introduce real world technicals to this fantasy game, but the rapier would be unsuited for wielding two. If anything, an off hand dagger or a hand crossbow would make more sense.

Classic/traditional rapiers weren't all that great for a real fight anyway, believe me I know about them xD. not that we usually see true rapiers in fantasy games. More often they more closely resemble small swords, or slighter built cut-and-thrust swords. What you say makes sense, but so far we've been shown that Rogues are dual wielders, so if we could use rapiers, we could use a pair. Maybe in the 'case of swords' fashion :)

Though in the vids I've seen that the daggers come as separate equip-able items, so it might still be possible to use a rapier/dagger combo. Could possibly even use one weapon, but unless they put in some system for it, you'd probably be at a great disadvantage.

This is a fair point, and my argument mostly stems from an aesthetic desire, it's true we might not even see rapiers in the game, and that would just be a shame, worse case scenario they'll sell them as weapon skins like in EQ2. X_X

I'm hoping to eventually see dual wielding tanks. Shields are nice and all, but I never hear anything about Drow using shields...

Drow are about killing the other guy faster, or before they even get into combat. As a culture it doesn't seem like they put much stock in shields.

I ventured over to the library a few days ago and found out what a swordmage was, that sounds like the perfect drow tank.

Interesting, I think if they introduced the brawny rogue, one of the paragon paths they could lead into could be the Blade Bravo, a more defenderish path for rogue strikers. Some of those abilities and mechanics you posted just brought that to mind. (and I'm learning more about the pnp game)

That would actually be wonderful! Here's to hoping, eh?
