Are there really that many people itching to play the cleric?
Im usually partial to healer types in MMOs but am very underwhelmed by the cleric. On top of that, it has been my experience that DPS trumps healers 100% of the time in MMOs. I suspect that the most popular classes will be:
1) Great Weapon Fighter
2) Control Wizard
3) Trickster Rogue
4) Devoted Cleric
5) Guardian Fighter
Most fun class in the beta so far (just based on reviews I have read from friends etc), is trickster rogue.
We don't know how fun the great weapon fighter or wizard will be yet.
In addition, we don't know if they will be available in beta before the game releases.
If GWF and wizard are not available, then I'd say they will be the most popular at launch (since we'll all want to try them).
But I'll probably say something like this:
1: Trickster Rogue
2: Wizard (most offensive range)
3: GWF (another offensive class)
4: Cleric (still decent ranged damage)
5: Guardian (many who would play this will be playing GWF instead).
That's my guess at least.

Based on past MMO experience:
1. Trickster Rogue
2. Great-weapon Fighter
3. Control Wizard
4. Tie between Devout Cleric/Guardian Fighter
Haven't had a chance to play the Devout Cleric yet so if they are decently offensive and not totally defensive then my prediction list would change to have Devout Cleric at 4th and Guardian Fighter at 5th.
You should change this into a "What class will you be playing?" poll thread.
1.rouges
2.wizard
3.cleric
4.gw fighter
5.g fighter
this if classes will be balanced and all needed for instances but if wont then will be like this
1.rouges 3/10
2.gw fighter 2/10
cleric 2/10
wizard 2/10
3,g fighter 1/10

The majority of people don't enjoy playing support or tank roles, so DPS classes are likely to be the most played. Generally, that's how it's been in every other MMO I've played.
From the looks of it, all you really need is a good GF and DC for a solid group. The rest can do DPS or whatever they want.. at least that's how I plan on playing the game with my duo partner.

personally from the 3 character slots i will have it will be
1) guardian fighter
2) devoted cleric
3) Great weapon fighter / maybe save it for a battle cleric when released
I am one of the strange people that only ever plays tanks / healers and occasionally other support (when games have support roles) the actual popularity of the classes will be the same as every mmo though all DPS classes in whatever order then the healer / tanks
I definitely agree that guardian fighter will be the least played of the five, and trickster rogue probably the most played. Hard to rank the others, until we see how the wizard and greatweapon actually play.

Some vids state that the Trickster is OP in comparison to the other classes. But that could be just because mobs die to quickly, or do not do enough dmg.
Personally
1 CM
2 DC
3 TR
4 whatever caster they release
5 whatever caster they release

It's not that rogues are exactly OP (although you can be almost unkillable with good use of the stealth ability and skills that reset it), but that it was the most offensive oriented class so far in the beta, which made combat more fast paced, and also made it seem more powerful over all since potions were all you needed to tank...and the other classes had either healing or defending abilities.
In addition, the rogue has direct damage AND dodging ability. The cleric has ranged damage but not as much, and the guardian could not dodge at all.
Dodge let you keep fighting/killing while avoiding damage..so it sped up combat even more.
Later in the game the rogue might not be as easy to play solo (Even with a companion)...we don't know yet. But since we were playing through early content that is designed to be easy, the class that had the most damage, and least defense (which meant you might actually feel it if you got hit etc), was the most fun by far...for a majority of people.
That will probably hold true once the game releases as well since the rogue is still probably going to have the highest DPS, followed by the great weapon fighter and then by the Wizard.
I'm thinking Wizard will be the second most played though as there are many players who just like spellcasters, many more who just like ranged based combat and basically the wizard is going to have the highest ranged damage at release (least it looks that way).
I'll just by happy if either the GWF or Wizard are as fun as the Rogue was, if both are...I'll be estatic!!
1: Trickster Rogue
2: Great Weapon Fighter

4: Devoted Cleric
5: Guardian Fighter
Ya ya, assuming balanced and all that! It is interesting how the guardian fighter is last or next to last for all the previous posters. So based on this short poll, play a guardian fighter if you have no friends to play with!
I scanned the forums to try and get a very rough idea of the classes people claimed they would play first upon release: rogue and cleric appeared to be equal first, followed by CW, GWF(very close) and GF clearly in last place.

I did enjoy playing the cleric...and if partying becomes more prevalent (especially 5 man dungeons) it might be the go to class. Main problem so far in the beta for cleric was even with the wolf companion...you still didn't kill nearly as fast as the rogue did with a cleric companion.
Cleric companion + potions with trickster rogue as your main can kill just about anything and only use potions in emergencies (so never come close to running out).
Wolf companion + cleric main, kills almost half as fast as the above choice....and can't really tank better either (due to rogues hide in shadows and stun abilities).
Clerics may be more useful in a party though, but...at least to me they were not nearly as much fun.
Spellcasters? Huh, naah, they are for pussys. (In case someone missed the tone and the emoticon. Check my previous post, my name, and my avatar).
Yes, singleplayer will probably be dominated by the Rogue. Hopefully they make sure that grouping is fun, important, and supported. I aim to be a CC primarily as CW. I am not looking for a singleplayer game
I will say though that Guardian Fighter was surprisingly REALLY fun to play, a lot more fun than I was expecting it to be. Prior to the beta weekend, I thought for sure I'd go with a Greatweapon Fighter, but I loved the Guardian. Since that's almost certainly going to be the least played class at launch, I'm pretty sure it will be my first main character.
1. trickster rogue
2. great weapon fighter
3. control wizard
4. guardian fighter
5. cerlic
why? because thats how it works in every fantasy mmo ^^
And no matter how hard the devs try to break the mold, [some] players will drag them kicking and screaming back to pure DPS/HEAL/TANK archetypes.
Still I am not going to try a list until I know what all the combinations are. I've always like ranged rogue types, or rangers. But I also like to play spell casters, and even healers. But I HATE 1 dimensional classes and the people who think that you can/should only do one thing.

Sadly, I think I have to agree with this. If Cryptic made a gold-skinned Wizard "racial background" you could add in a bajillion Raistlins.
