Greetings one and all. Started playing Basic D&D at 13, then AD&D to 2nd Edition. So for 34 years now I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons. Have never played 3.5 rules nor the new 4e rules. However, after discovering that this game is close to release, and finding out it is based on 4e rules I decided to pickup the 1st players handbook and have a look at what to expect and educate myself. Not to shabby, I look forward to adventuring in this brave new electronic world called Neverwinter.

This city promises death for the meek, glory for the bold, danger for all, and riches for Jade! Elven Trickster Rogue: Two-bladed elf, tons of stabby stabby and that sort of thing...

I started playing D&D in 1977 in the UK when I was 11, buying from a (then) small company called Games Workshop, at a Model Railway Exhibition, before they opened their first role-playing and board games shop.
Getting hold of a copy of D&D4 is very sensible to understand Neverwinter Online (NO).
Further more I'd recommend you consider experimenting with free-to-play Champions Online (CO), the base system for this D&D4 MMO, while NO is still in pay-to-test.
Superhero stories, done well, are about modern archetypes.
A Prootwaddle is one of the weirder player-character races in "The Fantasy Trip", Steve Jackson's first published role-playing game.
