I've been looking around the forums, and can't find an answer to this specific thing, Let alone anyone discussing it. I got a beta key from Pax East 2012, almost a year ago now, and input that into my account in JUNE of last year. They kept saying Beta was "coming soon", but along came Pax, where they gave out the same keys on fliers that they had before, but no word on when beta starts.
So now they have started the first beta weekend, as I only found out because some sites starting livestreaming it. but the only way to get in (besides winning some crazy contest) is to buy your way in for 200 bucks? what is this? I can understand founders getting access to beta, and I see a lot of recent games doing this, but why did you give me a key a year ago that does nothing? yes I'm aware there will be more tests coming up in the next few months, but I was told in person when I demoed the game at Pax that these keys would get me in when beta STARTS. I can't find any info as to when these beta keys will be activated. Does anyone know about this specific case, I'm sure there are plenty of people who picked up those keys at both Pax's last year, why can't I find anyone discussing this on the forums?
I realize this is just like one of those whining posts that everyone hates, but I feel like I've been passed over and forced to spend way to much money to actually play in a beta..
Read the first post of the thread that says, "Neverwinter Beta Weekend details Read this first!"
I don't know how to simplify the English language anymore. The post is updated whenever they have new information to release, so if it is unclear and says "to be revealed" or something, then they're still debating a course of action.

That link is correct. The comment text...not so kind
There is one for 60dollars, about same price as a normal video game. Wish I had the cash to get it. I'll just dump 40 or so at launch. I can already tell from the streams I will like this game. I hoping for a good crafting system and I will be all set.
What a money grab this game is. Not to mention the Neverwinter starters pack is a ploy to steal money from people with out telling them that it doesnt grant you Beta access.

if you looks thooughly at the three... it doesnt mention beta access when the other two do...

There are and will be more ways to access the Closed Beta Tests without paying for it.
And that is the end result I am afraid, you don't need to have first day access. Pay the money if you like otherwise there will be more chances free of cost.
I don't consider that money-grabbing. Certainly people are willing to pay *looks around at all the Founders Titles* but, heh, that's marketing for you. If you don't want to pay then you don't and will never have to, you just don't get first day access.
The game is free. The Beta is free. I hardly think it's fair to accuse them of money-grubbing for rewarding players who poored out $60-200 directly into their pockets by giving them a first look into the game.

The founders packs are definitely a test of gamers sheer stupidity in this day and age. Here we have a closed beta, a golden opportunity to have your game tested and fleshed out so it doesn't nosedive at launch.
Now lets slap $60-200 onto that concept! BRILLIANT.
Companies have no HAMSTER idea what a closed beta even is supposed to be anymore. Even open betas are completely borked and are nothing like they're supposed to be (Wizardry Online as the only recent exception I can think of).
It's a joke really, this "closed beta" is a cash grab for people stupid enough to be extorted. It's sad, but this practice will only continue.
I can't wait for next year when closed betas cost $10,000 to access, and games are released buggy as hell and all fail.
Though I will say, they DO very clearly state that your money isn't good enough for them unless you spend $60.

Or you could e content to wait to get in a beta through luck or wait for it to release and play for free. I bet you don't even even get upset when EVERY other monetary advantage notion gets mnetioned like Medallion members get to board first.
Sorry to say but you get what you pay for in this world and theres no use getting pissed because some decided to spend their money to get a benefit.

Theres been plenty of people testing the game throughout Alpha. Betas, especially open Beta weekends are glorified marketing compaigns to gin up support, cash and hype for a game. Perfectly fine to do so too.

I can't blame you for being sad or hurt...
But I would like it to be realized that these people spent $60-200 on a game which, although I assure you is great and tons of fun, they knew little about.
The game *has* to make money. Two to three years of development and they haven't had a dime to show for it. Frankly this marketing was a great head start in not only getting some money back but also showing PWE exactly what kind of game they have on their hands.
The amount of time spent into supporting the game, like it or not, directly interlinks with how much profit it pulls. The game is Free to Play but make no mistake this game will have to make a profit in order to justify supporting it.
Good sales, as I feel they had, can only have a positive effect on the game's future.
The number one thing I see from players who are upset, other than to state what you had said, is that these players don't care about being a Beta Tester. Well...that may be true but in that case they are great at stressing the system while the good Beta Testers are doing their thing. Odds are there will be some diamonds in the rough.
You all will get your chance soon enough. It just won't be the first weekend.
Many times I would be on your side about issues like this (in general, not just about Neverwinter) but in this case it's really not an issue IMO. You'll get access for free...you just won't get first access for free. It sounds like-every day life to me.
If you want something now you pay the price. If you don't want a sale price you have to wait.

While I appreciate the link, I had read that post and apparently missed the one line referring to the thing I have. My frustration is Basically that I got this key a year ago, after doing a very interesting interview with one of the developers. Then next time at PaX, they gave even more of them away, and I was shown the very impressive forge system, It's been 6 months from then, I gave out the codes they gave me as giveaways, and waited for that download button to show up. But looking at that post, the one line where my group is mentioned, doesn't even have a start date, they haven't even planned on inviting us to test yet, and their plans go past the next PaX East.. a year later and nothing? I feel slighted, and I feel like the plan to force players who haven't even seen the game to play 60 dollars or even 200 to be a part of the "testing" is just shady. While you are correct in saying I will get to play it for free "eventually", why did they bother to give out these beta keys a year ago to all the gamers that wanted to play this game?
I'm not claiming to be a huge fan, I do have an interest in the game, but I'm not going to sit here on the forums all day and defend the developers. And I most definitely won't be spending 200 dollars on a game I've seen about 30 minutes of video for. But I like to beta test, I like to get in there when it's still changing, and do my best give feedback that would improve the game in my opinion. I'm constantly in some beta somewhere, and have been for years and years. But recently, practices like this, and the always famous "open beta weekend" that isn't even a beta but is a failed stress test at best, marketing ploy at worst. Those practices are really hurting the actual games that end up coming out. I can't even think of a recent title that did the beta correctly.
Sorry for getting off on a tangent there, basically I feel annoyed at the team for promising beta access, giving me a key, then waiting a year and not letting me actually play the beta without paying money.

I paid the money because I want the game to succeed, and for it to succeed, they need to pay the people working on it. No stupidity involved. And if I get some beta action with it, plus the other bonuses, all the better. But I did not pay just to play beta. Hell, I work all the weekends beta will be up

The only issue "some" of us have is when speaking with on floor personal and devs at some of thier functions over the past two years lead us to "strongly" believe that some of the keys that were being handed out/earned from sto lifetimers was going to be first wave access. and while they changed their wording on that more recently it's left a bad taste in our mouths. Now yes.... 1 month does not make a load of difference. and YES no one strong armed them into making those promises, which is why it is my strong opinion that untill you have a POLISHED BETA you just shut your mouth and everyone elses on anything about the game aside from general teasers. I would have been better for them to just send out an email to STO lifetimers saying "hey thanks for supporting us when we needed it, when the time is right we will give you a sneak peak about anything we got brewing" And leave it at that. I was there at some of the last events when certin cryptic staff were making big promises by word of mouth to people on the floor. I know that is hype and I see it with every game at some of the big events, people promise stuff just so you will tweet or post about the game in general. Does not matter if "dozens" of races and classes would be out at launch.... They got me to tweet to some friends and it worked. And now I feel a bit used.
That is why these posts keep coming up. And before I get another warning letter, No it's not about trashing the game... It's about Integrity, Honesty and keeping ones word. I swear the next f2p game that keeps their word threw every step of the development cycle I will throw 1000$ into just to reward them for being Honest. But that won't happen so long as this industry keeps pulling cheap shots, using bad tatics and generaly acting like used-car sales men.... Less time promising more time working.

Mehhh I did the same for STO and I really felt like I got used and abused over that. I will never make that mistake again total biscut did a video on "pre-orders" and he was totally right, it's being taken advantage of insanely right now.
Now if they offered me 200$ in exchange for my "perfect" class and race I'd pay that, and who knows they might do that yet. But the luster of release can only happen once.

It boggles the mind how many times we have to explain this simple concept. No one paid for beta access, period. Those who bought a Founders Pack ~got~ beta access, sure, but it's not like we paid money TO beta test. And beta-testing is by no means over, so near as I understand it, it's entirely possible everyone who was ever told they could play in the beta-test will be able to. Eventually.
What a money grab this game is. Not to mention the Neverwinter starters pack is a ploy to steal money from people with out telling them that it doesnt grant you Beta access.
Move to Cuba. You may find a communist nation that hates on capitalism better to your liking. Oh and learn to actually read about what what you are buying. Every other pack says it grants you beta access and that one doesn't, what gave you the impression it did?
I HATE it when a company spends several years and millions of dollars crafting a fun, beautiful, awesome new D&D MMO that they're going to let us download and play for FREE . . . and then has the GALL to try to sell us some optional things so that they can be compensated for their work and keep the game running!
I didnt mind paying and having tested the game in the first beta weekend i would do it again.
I rather want to pay 200 now and get a little cash in there hands than that they release a bugged version because they need to have a money income.

How entitled- because they don't hand you something that they don't owe you in any way, they're doing something wrong? There is a lot of corporate greed in the world- but putting what some of them do on the same level as granting you access to a testing period for a game they're going to give you for free a few months later is NOT one of them.
Some of the whines on these forums are pathetic. Starter packs don't say a word about giving you beta access- if you can't read, maybe you belong in grade school rather than beta testing?
