I purchased the Hero package and the spider is cool, to say the least, but
One of the reasons that I was and am so interested in this on line game is that I want to make my character a certain way, look a certain way and act in a certain playing style
Riding a spider is not what I want my character concept to do or be on.
So, is there away in the game or before the official game starts to trade in the spider for a better looking horse than what the founders package has?
A horse that has better stats than that package?
Also, again, though the companions are very neat, can we change the look of them to something else four legged or trade them for a creature that would fit what we want when we build/design our character.
Not trying to be critical with all the hard work you have put into this game, but I just would like to have a bit more control on what my character will be wearing, carrying, riding on, and using.
I can virtually guarantee that you cannot alter or trade what you get with your purchased package. As uglybugger mentioned, though, you will be able to purchase (or perhaps earn) other mounts and companions within the game itself.
Of course, if you really want a horse, you can purchase the Guardian of Neverwinter Founder's Pack, which comes with an armoured horse mount. This would stack with the perks from your Hero of the North Founder's Pack. Alternatively, if you purchase a copy of the February issue of PC Gamer, you get a key that unlocks one of two horses.
Thanks for the note about the PC Gamer mag. I will have to get one of those.
I would hope that we could customize our character's items and such even it cost (in game or out of game, prefer in game) so we could have a the look we want.
I think it is a shame to have use a weaker item/creature to maintain a certain look.
It's not like I want the horse to be able to crawl up walls like a spider, but in most ways I would like it to be equal to it.

I can't give details from NDA'd stuff so apologies if my answer is vague.
You can buy items in game and often sell items you acquire. Some use standard currency (gold/silver/copper), some can be bought with secondary currency (Astral Diamonds,) and some things you can buy through the in game store with ZEN. When it comes to Founder's packs, you cannot customize, so I am sorry, but you can't swap out things. But I'm pretty sure there will be a person who will sell mounts as well as the Cryptic ZEN store options, and the AD to ZEN exchange or Vice Versa. As for selling items bought as package deals for cash/ZEN/AD in game, it's likely those would be sold for vanilla currency (gold.)
Finally, the PC magazine does give a free random black or white armored mount for FREE as well as that closed beta key....
But you ARE able to customize your items' look and maybe enchant it, however we're entering undisclosed space here, so this is where I must end until Cryptic employees wish to speak.

You can definitely enchant it. The $199.99 pack gives you an item that even says so.
