Floating orb thingy....

Was looking at some videos from Bitterwinter's video thread and noticed this orb floating in the video of the section with the Tiefling Wizard. Anybody else spot this or have any guesses as to what it might be?

it's kinda cool if you get a visual thing for specific choices you make

Especially if it is as powerful as the orb.

Class balance will say how strong it will or will not be

In 4E, wizards are broadly divided by role. Control wizards use an orb, but wizards who specialize in DPS have a wand, staff wizards have a little bit more defensive talent, and eventually a "Tome" wizard was added who specialized in summoning pets and effects.

Presumably, if these other kinds of wizards are introduced, we'd get wizards carrying books around, or waving a wand. Which would be neat.

Yeah. That said, with the nerf to OOI and the introdution of Cunning enchantment, most high level wizards (9+) went directly for staff. I'd love a tome of readiness build, though... it's so fun to play in pnp because it's REALLY flexible.

I want the tome too. It was among the later addition and until they introduced it, I never could figure out what was missing.

    I mean,
girly dress (aka robes) - check
spells to run away - check
    sparkles - check
cantrip to fool people - check

    ....
    Ah!
    The book!

    EDIT:
Now Hats and monocles are another issue ...
    And pigeons too

I'd like to see a Tome wizard because there is no pet class in Neverwinter at this point. I'm sure the Ranger will qualify, when that is added, but a Tome Wizard would have different pets for different situations.

As to the "competitiveness" of one build of wizard over others, this has never been a factor at my tables. Wizard players do not pick staff because staff is OP or whatever. If our table does not require min/maxing, if this is not expected, then it ceases to be a concern.

I want my big staff with the roundish thing at the top. I'd detail how it fires but I think I hear S&P coming *runs*

Would be nice to see some of the implements they are implementing ( :D )
I only saw gray soap bubbles in Beta2 going from level 1 to 32.

Yes, I'm surprised we have not seen some creative Orb models. I like the idea of an orb, I just want to see ruby, emerald and sapphire orbs, silver, gold, and brass orbs, burning, frozen, and electric orbs, and so on.

I just hope we get more options then just the soap bubble we have following us. I would like different color crystals or maybe some image or flame flicking in side.

Soap bubble? Yeesh must be some young people in here, I call it the Phantasm Ball, and I rather like it. Now if only it would shoot out blades and latch onto people's heads and start boring into their brains shooting out hilarious levels of blood in the process, then that would be even more funny.

    Soap bubble?

It might as well have been.

Putting aside how I hate how 4e turned Wizards (and many other classes) into cartoons (all "Control" wizards use an orb says the mighty, and highly unimaginative Andy Collins), the orb itself looked pretty stupid. In fact, almost exactly like a soap bubble, with no customization options at all.

Every time I saw a Control Wizard running around, I kind of grimaced. The animation of that class, was just utterly awful.

That's your opinion. I rather enjoyed the control wizard. In fact, I can already see it being a might too OP in fact.

I think that was why the wizards all had their fingers in the air, they were pretending it was a staff...

Those seeking a staff will get one when a War Wizard class is implemented. Elminster is one of the iconic characters of the Realms and there's good marketing sense to appeal to his fans. A War Wizard will use a staff and have close range AoEs like Thunderwave.

But we will have to wait a while for him.

I was also disappointed with the lack of visual for the orbs. Not so much as I was at a lack of diversity for spells mind you, but - as an artisan - visuals are important to me.
When I got a Colour Spray Orb, I sort of expected this rainbow swirling cloud inside the ball... I also half-expected it to grant me some additional abilities.. much like how kits grant additional abilities in STO. The 'stock Control Wizard' is a significant disappointment. I realize this is only beta, but you seriously need traditional spell rules in this game. There are more than 4 core classes in D&D. The fact that the game doesn't actually use the game rules, is a huge negative on my outlook on this game. I miss the original NWN that actually used the rule sets presented in the actual D&D books.

I am not that young and if they ever added a silver orb with a blade sticking out the front I too would be a very happy camper. Then I would make a very tall thin human or maybe a short dwarf if I could find an all black robe with a hood to run around with it following me.

As I posted in another thread, it would be very cool if the orb graphics could be replaced with something akin to an ioun Stone with maybe different shapes obtained as the Mage levels, or quests to find a different shape Orb etc.

I was always a big fan of Ioun Stones in my tabletop game and would love them implemented here.

I was thinking David Bowie the whole time I was playing. But yes, if you check, the classes at creation have higher level gear to make the class more appealing and the Orb still looks the same as the started orb from the classic DnD wrecked ship chest. Just need Volo telling me to fetch the gear versus Steve from American Dad AkA private Ryan. I'd rather keep the dual and boring orb we have than have them add on hot mess orbs that look gawdy. I think orb should be an off hand and we should get daggers in the main hand, even if we cannot melee with themf or cosmetic effects.

I have always believed that there will be different implement choices once the game launches. We are just not being shown the tome, the staff and other such implement choices. What else would they put as vanity in cash shop?

I will pray I am not wrong...
