first things first. I have no experience with the 4th Edition of DnD, but i have seen a ranger class in their lists.

Is there going to be a ranger class in neverwinter or it is a subclass of another one?

There were 5 classes at the start pre PWE, but ranger looks/might have dropped off the starting list, it looks at this point. Looks like there going to open with the red box with more (classes, subs) to follow, but we will just have to wait and see.

i myself was keen for Ranger class, Rangers lead the way.

For now it has not been reconfirmed after the delay of year in launch of the game if ranger are included in introductory classes, but stromshade has said that they plan to include all the classes on rolling basis and that the engine has the ability to define and include any new class.

So even if ranger is not included at first, you can be sure to get it within few updates.

check the interview with devs from MMORPG.com, they play as a Trickster rogue that wield two weapons.

actually dual wield, shield, sword and wizard orb? is all the weapons we see in the game play

I just hope they don't mess up like DDO & give out both choices for rangers. I think that is one reason ranged combat sux so badly in DDO.
I'm not sure how 4th edition works but, I hope rangers still have to choose one or the other.

Back in the day when the universe was still young... or more precisely, when the site was still not open and had just some vague image of some silhouettes and the logo of the game, those silhouettes were of five people. Each of those represented one class: fighter, cleric, rogue, wizard and ranger. Ranger was holding a bow.

Considering all the time passed, the changes and stuff, that detail may not mean anything at this point. But except for the rogue (already shown as two weapon user), ranger would be the other only option for a bow focused class.

Not really, as ranger is also a dual wielding class in 4e rules.

I know. But we don't know how has Cryptic designed the classes yet so they may only have one build. But maybe, finally, this E3 we get some solid info about classes.

Actually, we have a fairly large number of clues just based on interviews as the descriptions provided. They mentioned the two rogue path choices, so that pretty much leaves it pretty wide that choosing a path will be integral, though it remains to be seen if we can pick and choose our starter abilities.

We do have clues but the fog is too thick for sun to shine. Also SS said he is very excited to discuss character creation but can't for now. So it has to be much more detailed than that to be interesting. However, there is also an indication that customizing of classes would be easier. So (it seems) devs can tweak/delete/add the classes based on community feedback.

Also we know nothing about paragon paths, multiclass or hybrid (if only PHB1 was followed, they might be absent during launch though, but we don't know that).

There are rogue abilities based on bows/crossbows. There is also an underground cult named heavy repeater rogue club who make one irrespective of odds. iirc, in pnp 4e there is no low lvl multi-enemies hitting melee ability for rogue but only a ranged one.

But yes, ranger and ranged are very similar words so imo ranger should be more into ranged than any other class.

It's not just about the bow, it's also about the animal companion thing that is pretty popular in the "modern MMO culture". And, unless I'm mistaken, Ranger is the best class that can perfectly incarnate the stereotype which is also incarnated by the WoW Hunter (just to cite an example, but I'm pretty sure there's more).

If there will be a 5th class at release, I think it's pretty safe to say that it will most likely be the ranger.
It would also best fit the 5people size of parties (though I understand this may be subject to change) they mentioned in the Pax interview.

Well they mentioned there would be pets but they didn't mention whether it would be ranger exclusive. If it isn't one would have to wonder why a ranger would be needed if all PC's can have pets.

Pets and animal companions are two different things in the MMO language.
Pets are usually cosmetic "companions" available via token purchase to all characters, they don't fight and don't give any particular bonus in combat.
Animal companions are integral part of your character progression, they fight alongside you, they may also have a progression on their own. And they are always limited to a build or class (not everyone can have them or can get an optimal build with them - in the case of RIFT).

In the D&D 4th edition, of all the first book classes, only the beastmaster ranger can have animal companions. In other books there are other classes, such as the druid, but I doubt we'll see a druid, because it's a controller archetype, like the wizard, and if you have to make a 5party setup with all different classes it's more common to see a distribution of Tank/Healer/CC/DPS/DPS than Tank/Healer/CC/CC/DPS, but this is just speculation at this point.

Rangers in D&D are very solo'able. This highly desirable. The same goes for druids. My prefered play style is to play duo or in a party of 3. After that, it's solo. Rangers & Druids are both very attractive classes. And having pets? That's a huge reason rangers are so dangerous.

A sad reminder of what was mentioned before:
    2. Long ago Ranger and Cleric were also announced in an interview. Now we hear that only Rogue, Fighter and Wizard were announced. How is it then?

We're were only showing the Rogue, Fighter, and Wizard. More are coming, and Cleric's will definitely be in. We're not saying anything about the ranger at the moment though. Sorry!

lol, why sad. It doesn't means a no. Just no comments. I would take that as a maybe.

Though I will brood over the fact why are they not showing cleric. Also am ordering a straw doll in case I have to curse something if they ... oops! :-X

I don't mind the ranger (my first true class in 1st ed) not being present at launch. I would rather have classes done properly with detail and robust mechanics than more classes that are shallow.

I do want to see more classes added as time progresses though.
