if you already bound a lower quality version of a companion, is it possible to buy (from auction) a higher quality version and redeem that to overwrite the older quality? or would I get a "you already own that companion" error?

If you get a better and bind it, it will overwrite the original, keeping the name you gave the original.

I personally don't know if that will work but you can test that in preview. You can delete your companion.

(I was just buying some companions on auction - a lot of companions seem to be really cheap right now) and was a bit worried that it would lock me out if I ever had the opportunity to get a higher quality so that instead I would have to use companion upgrade tokens (I remember reading a while back that it is always best to get the highest quality companion/mount that you can afford since the upgrade paths are really expensive)
