What happened to the C-Store Companions?

I mean, I went there earlier, after I got my 100% off coupon, and the section was a virtual wasteland.
Why and when did they remove so many of the companions that were there?
Even if there was no market for them, that no one had bought whatever companion for some extended length of time, does their existence in the store create some sort of issue for the game?
At the very least I would expect a replacement' If no one wanted the Galeb Duhr and there had been no sales in the past two years or whatever that they would have made some other companion to take it's place. But no, just one less companion to choose from, and that scenario repeated several more times.
I can't cite every companion that was there by name, but there were several, and now they are just gone.
It just doesn't seem like the options there now really cover a lot of the bases, especially when you consider the quality of the companions... I am not sure why I should use a 100% off coupon to buy a green- or blue-quality companion that is neither as expensive or useful as a purple-quality companion.
Anyway, just thinking that a couple of different types of companions at different quality levels in every category might be a nice minimum.
Male and female of the "usual" races as well as something more fantastical. Same with the animals... A badger and an owl are fine, but how about a few more options on top of that and including some fantasy animals alongside the normal ones?
There used to be so many, now there are 8.

That just seems like they are barely even trying to sell them any more.
