Enchantment Medallions Equip Option

Why do Enchantment Medallions have an equip option? What happens when you equip an enchantment medallion? I had 2 in my inventory. I equipped and both disappeared from my bag. I spent some time looking for them (checked in Riches and Useful Items), and then they reappeared in my inventory a little later...

Should they be equippable?
