Why is this a thing?
What possible justification is there to have players throw away their currencies for items that become instant garbage?
What sort of bait-and-switchy, misleading, malarkey is going on here that is allowed to continue to exist and frustrate players?
I mean - I can't think of a single justifiable reason to leave such a "Sorry we stole your hard earned currency" mechanic in the game.
I can't conceive of this being an oversight - so I'm left with the conclusion that this is a deliberate trolling of the players.
I'd be absolutely thrilled to find out that I'm mistaken and it's something that is going to be retroactively addressed instead of being left in the game as a "feature" to troll players and create even more bad blood for items that were never fixed and time that has never been compensated for ancient mechanics that were never fixed.
