Will Neverwinter Online run on Steam Deck?

With Valve's recent exciting announcement of the Steam Deck, I can't help but ask: Will we be able to officially play Neverwinter Online on the Steam Deck?

I am aware that Neverwinter Online is currently unsupported for play on Linux, but considering how Windows 11's idiotic hardware restrictions are driving gamers away from using Windows, could the Steam Deck be the game-changer that might change Cryptic Studio's stance?

Looking at how Neverwinter Online plays so well on consoles, it is not unreasonable to believe that the Steam Deck has been made for Neverwinter Online. Just a thought.

Well, Neverwinter it's not supported natively on Linux, but runs very well on Proton in Steam (main focus on Steam Deck).
But will be nice to see the game beeing verifed on Steam Deck by the devs.

According to this (updated on date Feb 23, 2022),
    https://www.pcmag.com/news/will-your-favorite-games-run-on-steam-deck-valve-made-finding-out-easy

"My own Steam library contains 303 games. Of those, 14 are Deck Verified, six are Deck Playable, two are Unsupported, and 281 are untested. That should give you some indication of the task Valve is facing with regards to testing games. There's a long way to go, but the list of untested games should slowly diminish over the coming months."

So, basically, the chance is nobody knows or tried to know.

The February 15 change to drop Windows 7 support also broke running Neverwinter via Steam Play/Proton on Linux for me: it now just says "Unsupported Operating System" instead of opening the launcher. So it's not going to work on the Steam Deck until they allow it to again.

Last time I checked, I was able to boot in Wine 7.0. You can go as low as 6.17 but I have no idea about the Proton fork of Wine. Even if you don't desire to replace your Windows 7, Linux can be installed to operate along side it. It doesn't take up a lot of drive space and you won't need to move the games to it, since it can read the Windows file system. I even made a video showing you can play Neverwinter (and other games) from a Live USB thumb drive using Sparky Linux GameOver Edition. I can't recommend running it like that for other than an extreme situation where you need to log in to pick up rewards, check mail, and maybe professions.

It is amazing, many professional businesses, including the US military still operate with Windows XP today. Back in 1999, I was working with GM PowerTrain and they were upgrading from Windows 3.11 to Windows 98. I tried telling them, the OS would just change again in 2 more years, Windows 2000 was available at that time. Windows 10 is still supported until Oct 2025, Windows 11 support ends Oct 2023, at which point they will release the next version of Windows 11.

As for Steam Deck, I imagine it will take some time before an avid player can tweak it and get Neverwinter to run on it. I know Cryptic will not put anyone on it. Steam will only be looking at the developers to maintain their own product. Steam is just offering them another platform to use. My nephew has a Linux handheld PiBoy, he was able to get almost anything running on it (including Neverwinter). I will consult with him on the Steam Deck. I think the PiBoy still costs about $100 US, which is considerably less than a Steam Deck.

About a week ago I tested Neverwinter on Linux with POL and Steam. It still works on both, with POL at 6.17 and Steam Proton, both 7 and Experimental.

I just checked and it still works on Linux desktop here too. Since this is about Steam Deck, a new Linux portable device, I discovered https://www.protondb.com has added a "Deck Verified" button on the filters. :+1:

Does this mean it works for the Steam Deck? Well it might, since we know it runs in Linux. However the game itself refuses to work with controllers, I can't see the purpose of being portable and having to lug around a keyboard and mouse just to play Neverwinter.

BTW here is a review by Linus Tech Tips on YouTube.
