Companions should sleep, play solitaire games, look bored out of their minds, find a fire hydrant, busy themselves with useless action whenever the player activity is idle beyond a fixed time period. It would help other players understand why there is no response ... and would provide some entertaining humor in the game.

Preferably AFK players pose some animation.. like bard class play some songs..
