How do Barkshield charges work?

The tooltip says with 4 charges of bolstered bark your armor absorbs 51200 damage, with 3 charges it absorbs 38400.

Suppose a boss hits you with 80000 damage. Will those 80k damage consume the 4th charge (51200) and you receive the remaining 28800 damage? Or will the 80k consume the 4th charge (51200) and the 3rd charge to block the whole 80k?

I was just doing epic demo, I don't know how my barkshield blocked a 250k damage hit at once (I saw 250000 with the blue shield icon, I'm not a tank so I wasn't blocking).

You only used one layer of the four - but Barkshield is like fight club. We don't talk about fight club.
