Problem with barovia quest

So i started the "Unwelcome Guests" and proceed like it wanted me to, went to the gipsy camp, got ambushed by fhurrballs, killed em all.
Got that tarokka deck box, slammed it and got a card. Then went on my marry way down the path, killed 2 furrballs and met some guy on a horse.
After some yadayada he told me i can proceed and went up in smoke. Now im confused because i cant go trough the gate and i cannot return to the duchess, since the fog throws me back in the camp.
Anyone knows how to proceed?
