I started making use of the old workshop in mod 13 or 14 and when the new workshop was implemented my gathering skill was very high for three of my characters and I had most of the professions maxed out among four different characters!
Choosing Artisans: when I started, I just went with whatever I got and made sure they all had 3 for gathering and 1 for each of the available professions!
Starting with MOD 16 I decided to put more effort into the workshop with emphasis on finding artisans that fit my narrow view of what I needed for the workshop to be more effective for me!
Now, when looking for an artisan my focus is always on speed and/or the commission multipliers! The values for proficiency, focus and special ability are not even considered when choosing!
For my level 3 workshops I look to have one artisan with a -50% or greater bonus to the commission multiplier and one with a +50% or greater bonus to the speed multiplier or one with both! For the Gathering profession I am just looking to reduce all of the +50% or greater penalties to the commission multiplier down to 0% or lower while still maintaining the +25% or greater bonus to the speed multiplier!
For my level 2 workshops I am just looking to find an alchemist with a -50% bonus or greater modifier to commission and no penalty to speed and to find adventurers with a +25% or greater bonus to speed and a 0% or less modifier to commission!
My best artisans, based upon this narrow view, is any artisan with a -75% Commission Multiplier and a +75% Speed Multiplier.
Example: from one of my level 2 workshops a level 70 jeweler (common) that provides a +335 to Proficiency and Focus, -75% Commission Multiplier, +75% Speed Multiplier and Special Skill is Passion Project: 20% chance to negate the commission cost at the start of a recipe.
There are exceptions: for gathering I have kept a few because the special skill provided gives a “20% or 25% chance to instantly complete a project or negate the morale cost!”
I have also kept a few, in any profession, where the artisan has the special skill that provides a “20% or 25% chance to double the items received”
Currently, I have gathering maxed out for my first 6 characters and have the last two between levels 60 - 65! I have used all six or eight at various times to gather certain resources very quickly! Most notably crates of astral diamonds, beehive chips, Trout and the ingredients for whatever glue type I needed to mass produce!
Even when I only had 4 characters at level 70 for gathering resources it still sped up the process considerably when I used all of them to farm for whatever materials were needed to make a whole bunch of stuff for all eight of my characters! (This was back when you could equip regular level 70 items on companions and while I was still leveling up my other 5 characters!)
When leveling up temporary characters I use the workshop to create armor and weapons for said character at levels 20-26, 32-39, 44, 52 and 60 or even just to give similar items to other players that seem to me like they could use the help!
For all eight of them I have Alchemy at level 70 and I made the adamantine alembic +1 tool for all of them!
I made level 70 +1 gathering tools (x3) for all of them! (Adamantine Tools, Oak Tools and Shimmerweave Nets)
Legendary Tools: I have one Legendary Gathering Tool (A Legendary Crossbow that I purchased from AH) that I use for gathering crates of astral diamonds! Did not waste time or AD on other Epic or Legendary Tools for gathering as it does not seem necessary to me!
For the others I have acquired one of each from AH excluding Alchemy and have spread them out amongst three characters! The alchemy one, during the times when I was interested in it, was just too expensive for me to purchase from AH!
I have 5 workshops at level two, 3 workshops at level three and have determined that using the alchemy profession to create Myrrh will be what gets my level 3 workshops to level 4!
For all of them, when attempting to go from a level two (2) workshop to a level three (3) one I used the alchemy profession to make honey, beeswax or fish oil! For me at least it seems easier to just gather 1 type of resource to make it happen! For the three that have the workshop at level 3 about 80% of the 500k commission was me selling beeswax +1 to the vendor! For the remaining five I still have about 400k to go for each of them!
For my first three characters, while attempting to level the workshops to level three (3), I used the other two gathering slots to acquire whatever resources I needed to level up various other workshop professions with the intent of having all professions maxed out for those three! For the other five characters I am pretty much only concerned with their alchemy and gathering skills!
None of my characters have any of the master professions although at least two of my characters have apparently picked up a quest or two for it!
I have acquired all of the Chultan recipes but that was more of a completion thing for my main and have had no reason to actually making anything form it!
I have succeeded in having one character with all professions at level 70 and the other two are just not going to make it before MOD 17 hits and the workshop becomes unusable but I will still work on them! (Sorry, this is just my assessment of what will most likely happen when MOD 17 is released.)
